When I saw my verbal score of V40+ a couple days ago on the screen, I bursted with happy tears. At some point in the last month, I thought I would never 'get' gmat SC. Therefore, I want to share my experiences here with those of you who are also struggling with gmat SC.
When I first started my gmat Verbal preparation, I tried solving as many questions as possible, exhausting all the questions in OG and verbal review. You see, that's a lot of questions and a lot of time. Unfortunately it didn't pay off as expected. I only realised that this approach will not get me my desired score for Verbal after receiving a low verbal score in the last exam. As soon as I finished the real exam, I realised that I might need a bit of help to study with the right method and materials, so I started searching for gmat prep company/tutor to improve on my SC/Verbal score. Very luckily, I was able to find e-gmat.
I reached out to e-gmat consultant -Archit, who helped me to analyse my ESR together. We quickly identified that I have both 'conceptual gaps' and 'method gaps', and I was not learning much from the OG questions as I was not reviewing and analysing the questions in the process. I was merely relying on the sound and some 'rigid rules' I memorised from the OG questions. We agreed on a plan in which I will learn all the concepts from scratch and apply the concepts following a 'meaning-based' approach.
Initially, my plan was not smooth either. I was not able to reach an 'accuracy' of 70% with even the medium level questions. So I reached out to Archit again, who clearly identified that my problem is that I was not proficient in recognising sentence structures, and suggested me to revisit all the 'application videos' that breaks down the question and teaches me 'how to solve a question'. I was a bit skeptical at the beginning as it means another 10 hours of work doing the questions I already solved. But then I convinced myself to trust someone who clearly has way more experience preparing for the gmat exam than me. Thinking back, I can't thank myself enough for following Archit's advice. After following the application files religiously, breaking down each of the 30-50 or so questions I already solved sentence structure by sentence structure (subject, verb, modifier), identifying the meaning first, then try to select the answer choice. It really didn't take as much time as I thought and I was able to see a massive accuracy improvement. And it's this improvement in SC that turned my V34 to a V40 and 690-730 in three weeks!
I didn't hesitate to suggest the e-gmat verbal course for all of my friends who are also struggling for gmat verbal. I also wanted to write this debrief for those of you who are also struggling with gmat verbal to try to learn SC according to the method I listed above and I suggest to give e-gmat a try. Gmat was definitely not a walk in the park for me, and I had to adjust my study method multiple times. But I never lost faith, and I guarantee you with the right mindset, effort and study method, you will definitely achieve your dream score!
Special shout out to Archit again for all your guidance, patience, and kindness along the way!
