Hello everyone, I recently took the GMAT and managed to get a score of 760 (Q51V41). I just wanted to tell you all about the preparation and exam experience, in the hope that it will be useful to you

. This is my first post here, so let me know if I'm doing something wrong or if I miss something.
I started preparing for the GMAT in mid August. I immediately knew that verbal would be the main area of study for me. Being an engineer from India, quant is a strong point for me

, so I only studied verbal in the beginning. That is also the reason I targeted a 750+ score, because that will be the only chance I have at getting into a top college for MBA.
I used the following resources:
- Sentence correction - Mainly Aristotle SC Grail, a little bit of Manhattan SC.
- Critical Reasoning - Powerscore CR Bible.
- Reading comprehension - I just practiced from OG using the GMAT club practice question banks with the timer.
- Quant is again a strong subject so I just practiced from the practice question banks.
Once I studied the basic concepts of SC and CR, I practiced a bit of everything from the official guides. I gradually moved to more difficult questions and I timed myself solving a set of 10-12 questions each time. I tried to average about 1min45s per question for both verbal and quant. I then reviewed my answers and explanations for all verbal questions, including those that I got correct. I was getting almost all questions correct in quant, only mistakes were when I overlooked something in DS or made a calculation mistake etc.
I attempted the free test from Kaplan in which I scored 680. Reviewed the test, identified weak points, studied a bit more and gave the first GMATPrep practice test in which I scored 720. After this, I tried a few different practice tests from Veritas, Manhattan and Kaplan (again), and I kept scoring in the 710-740 range, but then I hit a ceiling. In quant I was at around a Q50 level, but in verbal I was stuck at around 37-39. I just needed a little bit extra in verbal. At this point, I got to know of this website from a https://gmatclub.com/chat group.
GMAT club is a godsend for all kinds of GMAT aspirants. This website has been unbelievably useful to me. At first, I just read the posts about how to improve verbal from high 30s to low 40s. There was a post by souvik giving a few ideas and one post by
carcass where he posted hundreds of high level SC questions. These were super good and I solved a lot of questions from these. I also found out about the YouTube video series by
GMATNinja.
For verbal (and even for quant) I very strongly recommend videos from GMATNinja, which you can find on the official GMATclub YouTube channel. However, I would suggest to only see these videos after you have a basic knowledge of the concepts of SC and CR. These videos are perfect for you to take your score from something like a 700-720 to somewhere in the 750-760 range, but they will be much more useful when you know the concepts beforehand. I watched all of these videos and started attempting questions from the GMATClub practice question banks. For verbal, I put a filter on official guide source, as it is pretty much the only reliable resource on good quality verbal questions. I would recommend practicing quant from any question by
Bunuel, of which there are a lot

. Make sure to time yourself on all questions.
This proved to be the perfect strategy for me, as I was able to raise my level in verbal to around 40-42. This is only a 3 point increase, but it makes a big impact in the overall score. A Q49V38 would result in around 710, while a Q51V42 would result in 770, so you can see how big of a change it is. With a bit of refinement in quant, verbal and after watching a few videos on GMATclub YouTube channel for some strategy improvements, I attempted the second GMATPrep practice test two weeks before the exam and got a 750 (Q50V41). This boosted my confidence, and I then attempted a full scale exam (including IR/AWA which I used to skip till this point) again reusing the GMATPrep test, and while there were a few repeated questions, I scored 770 (Q51V42).
In the actual exam, I felt that verbal questions were of a similar level to the GMATPrep practice tests, while the quant questions were a slight bit harder. I would say that this was due to exam pressure, because I tried to get every single question correct on quant and was therefore double/triple checking my answers. This is a good strategy (as the GMATClub YouTube channel would tell you), and even though on both verbal and quant I had to guess a few questions in the last quarter, it didn't affect my score too much.
For AWA I just followed the
chineseburned template, and while I didn't follow it completely, it was good enough for a 5.5.
That's it for this long winded summary of my GMAT prep journey, and I hope it is useful to you. I cannot thank this website enough, especially
Bunuel,
GMATNinja and
carcass. This website is the single biggest factor in my success in GMAT.
