The same thing (basically) happened to me.

I scored even math, even verbal - 640.
Then I BOMBED math, and KILLED verbal - 640.
Then I did about the same as on my first exam on math, and killed verbal - 730.

Could it have been nerves?

Hi,
It's actually GmatPrep... the current one that is given when you register for GMAT test. I wrote it wrong on the post...sorry.
Well, I was nervous during the test, but I'm not sure whether it is the only factor since my maths scores were not affected on both tests. Plus, I'm so surprised why I didn't get any assumption question for CR. I'm trying to figure out what happened. I think it may be because 1) I'm nervous 2) time... usually when I practiced, I tried to spend 2 min on CR, 1.75 min per Q on RC, and 1.5 min on SC. But I think during the test, I felt like I used more than 1.5 min on SC question. So, I was concerned about timing during the test. In addition, I also got a little confused when I got "which of the following best complete the passage" question so many times for CR. ... Is this inference question?
Last factor could be luck ... :( I still feel that I got really hard questions on the test. I wish I could remember all the questions now, so I could do it again and determine whether I got "weirdo questions". One of my friends even teased me that it might be the "sign" that I should not do Ph.D...

P.S I really want to thank you, Rhyme. I used your method for RC, and it's really cool!!! :-D

Hi Pelihu,
I probably try to pull maths score up this time too... but to be honest, I was not a good maths student either. I actually majored in Econ first, but at that time I wanted to do Ph.D in Finance, so my adviser put me in maths program. Anyway, I will definitely try harder on maths. I plan to do the challenge on GMATCLUB. Thanx for your suggestion.

Hey mate! From what I read, u are being to hard on yourself. Try to see your situation from a different perspective.
U thought u did poorly on verbal the first time, so u focused on improving that part. U tried hard and got a higher grade on that section. U are right, the final grade is still the same, but at least it showed that u did some progress. Next time, u will just have to focus and balance on both parts equally. I'm sure u know that u won't have to start all over again with studying and stuff. Just focus on the little things that make a big difference, for instance, your attitude on D-day.
Cheer up and get them!

hey guys, thanx for your replies...
brufarber, your words make me feel better. I really appreciate it because I went shopping for 2 days now and that didn't help cheering me up. :x After I read your post, I began to think that it is true that my verbal score improved, though a little. :) I will begin to do Gmatclub challenge, SC 1000, RC 1000, and CR 1000 tomorrow because I want to feel more confident about my pace.
Last thing I want to say is about GMATPrep. It is totally possible that the practice test is accurate, and the discrepency in my scores results from my nervousness. So, please don't feel discouraged by my post.

Well, now that I re-read what I wrote, of course I meant "too" hard on yourself. Anyway, I repeat myself, Don't be too hard mate! 1 question right means sthg like 10 extra points, and u improved your score by more than just one question. So u are not that far from your target. Trust me, I improved 110 points not on my studying technics but my self-confidence. If I'd say that anybody can beat them, I'd be lying. But u getting a 7--...? U are not far, work on it. Talk to u soon!

gmat_06,

I'm right there with you. I've gotten 660, 660 and 640 my three times I took it. Almost EXACTLY the same spread too. Was in shock after I saw that 640 the last time.
