Hi va789,

Assuming that you took your official practice exam under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than V32. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves, stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Although I’m unsure of how you prepared, it’s possible that, in your preparation, particularly in verbal, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your preparation, particularly for verbal, probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them.

Why Was My GMAT Score Lower Than My Practice Test Scores?

Thanks ScottTargetTestPrep for your response. I agree with your point that this outcome could be because of either a genuine weakness or a bad test day performance. What do you think my next steps should be? I'm a little confused about how much "effort" should I put into studying again. If it helps, I ordered my ESR and have updated the original post with additional comments. Let me know if I can share anything else with you that could help. Thanks!

I think I could have just had a "bad day" today
I think so too, since you had a V41 in GMATPprep.

So, V32 does look like an anomaly.

Thanks EducationAisle for your response. Even though having a bad day could be highly possible, I want to make sure that this is indeed the case. What do you think my next steps should be? Also, I ordered my ESR and have updated the original post with additional comments. Thanks!

I am really impressed with your "self-awareness":).

You had mentioned the following in your original post:

RC>CR>SC

Your ESR confirms this. Great job. More often than not, I have seen people getting surprised by the revelations of the ESR. In your case, it is "as expected".

So, you have your task cut out. SC clearly needs your most attention, in Verbal.

Thank you for your kind words. What would you suggest me to do next? Should I practice more SC questions before taking another mock? How do you feel about the CR score?

Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm curious to see how things go with your practice exam this weekend. Could you take that test and then get back to me with the score breakdown? Once I have that information, we can take things from there.

Hey va789,

Thank you for sharing your story here and writing to us with your ESR. I have responded to the email you sent to the Strategy Team as well

I have created a short ESR Analysis video for you to help you understand the data there. You can view it here --> https://success.e-gmat.com/ESR-Analysis-660-va789 :)

There are a few things that I found from your debrief that are worth mentioning -

1)
Quote:
For verbal too, my accuracy was 80(+)% (RC>CR>SC)

I am afraid that when it comes to predicting success, it's important to have more than one data point to conclude with confidence that it's not a bad test-taking issue. I wanted to share a story of a student that I worked with (similar to yours). He was stuck at a 690 and wanted to improve from there on out. How do you KNOW that you will do well on the test - it's simple, we look at data from your concept quizzes, practice quizzes, cementing and test readiness to predict your likelihood of success.

You can watch how his account metrics look like here - https://success.e-gmat.com/Christos-Predictable-Success

2)
Quote:
1) GMAT Club test (Q only): Q49 11 Dec'21
2) GMAT Prep 1 (Full test; took 8-minute breaks): 740- Q49V41 30 Dec'21
3) GMAT Club test (Q only): Q44 3 Jan'22
4) GMAT Club test (Q only): Q49 3 Jan'22 (Took this test immediately- after about a break of ~15 min- after Q44 attempt as I knew Q44 is not my ability and did not want to spark doubt in my head before my actual exam)

If you look at when you are taking Mocks and the gaps between them, you'd see that you were not primed for success either. Taking Mocks routinely (twice every 4 days) before your test prepares you for the rigor of the GMAT. This certainly played a role in how you handled time on the first two blocks of Quant & Verbal.

To conclude, I believe you need to go back to the drawing board for SC instead of taking another Mock or practicing questions. That is what will truly help you.

I hope my response helps you understand WHAT WENT WRONG.

Regards,
Dhananjay(aka DJ)
