GMAT Debrief | Disappointing 680 Q51V30 after 710 in 2020 06 Jun 2022, 01:48

So I gave the GMAT online yesterday, and ended up getting a disappointing Q51V30 IR4. I did prepared around 200 hours before this attempt and mostly focussed on verbal. I have given around 10-11 mocks in last 1 month, and never have I ever got below V35. I had given MGMAT and Official mocks. Also, I have never got below IR7 in any of the mocks. In verbal section, I found that the questions became increasingly difficult around 22-26 question number. Also, I was lagging behind in time. Then came a RC passage which was almost impossible to read. I had never seen any RC like that in Official guides or in any mock. I almost guessed all the 4 questions of the RC. Also, since I was lagging behind in time,I had to guess last 3 questions. My target score is 740+. I had earlier appeared for GMAT in 2020 and got a 710 V35Q50.
I am now confused on how should I direct my prep, I have completed OG twice for verbal.

What material did you use for Verbal prep, apart from OG?

Also, ESR might throw some light Vinamra.

Working an a reading methodology that promotes absorption can be helpful.

How to get a V40 or higher on the GMAT? What about a V51?

Hi Vinamra6,
It might be a good idea to buy ESR and consult with an expert to set new strategies. @GMATNinja's verbal lessons, and gmat club RC and SC Butler questions, are some of the good resources to improve the verbal scores.

ESR is not available for online GMAT, and hence I dont have a way to know what exactly happened with my verbal

Hi Vinamra6,

I'm sorry to hear that this 2nd attempt did not turn out better. That having been said, I want to reiterate something that we previously discussed: a 710/Q50 is already an outstanding Score, so you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, another retest is probably not necessary.

Approximately 1 week ago, I sent you a PM with some questions about how you work through the Verbal section. That additional information is essential to defining the adjustments you will likely need to make to score higher in that section (assuming that you choose to retake the GMAT again).

I would not worry about the IR but I guess it is somewhat consistent and indicative of your day. I think it just did not go well for some reason and you did not perform as you should have.
Also, my message would be that GMAT is really a sprint and I suggest not taking long breaks between attempts since it is a struggle in terms of review, prep material and other aspects. Though I have been proven wrong by Souvik who has taken the GMAT and scored a 740 and then a 760 with just hours of review before the test back in 2020 when GMAT online came out but I think that's more about Souvik than anything else. He is just a superman :lol:

My advice would be to figure out what level you are at. I think giving 10-11 mocks was a lot. I am not sure you really needed to do that (as you can see by the result, that does not make you score better or higher). That could have been the reason you exhausted yourself. Imagine training so hard before a fight that you are exhausted. What athletes do instead is rest for a few days before the race/fight/etc to get the most of their energy. Something also to consider.
