I have recently taken the GMAT Online for the first time and got a 720 (47Q 42V 5 IR 5 AWA). I'm willing to retake, because I believe I can do better.

However, it's unclear to me if a setback in a new test will impact my overall score. If, for example, I take it again and get a 690, can I send only the 720 score to the schools? From what I've searched in forums it seems that I can do it, but I haven't found this answer in official sources and it just seems to good to be true for me. If I am willing to spend the money and not rushing to submit applications this year, can I take the online exam 5 times and just apply next year with my greatest score without the other 4 having any impact on the application at all?

Given that I'm willing to spend the money and that timing is not an issue, is this a good strategy?

Yes you can send your best score to the schools.

And if you take the online test, you can take a FaceTime to that any traces of your other scores. You can choose which score you submit.

What do I try to tell you is that there’s no downside to retaking but you have to also evaluate the upside. Are you going to spend too much time on the test while you perhaps should be working on your applications. That’s not a concern, sure, if you have it in you, See if you can improve your score. At the same time, almost everyone including myself after taking the test felt they could’ve done better and that they would’ve done better next time. I almost re-took my test or I shouldn’t say almost Retoca but rather contemplated about retaking it but that would be pretty wasteful and probably would be one of the bigger mistakes I would’ve made in my in the mini list of mistakes in my application 😂

Hi Sampere,

BB has given some very solid points for why retaking the GMAT is not a bad idea. You currently have a great GMAT score, so even if your new score were to drop by 20+ points, schools would just consider your 720. Also, keep in mind that if you take the GMAT at a test center, you have the option to cancel your next GMAT score if it comes to that.

Hi Sampere,

First off, a 720/Q47 is an outstanding Score, so you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is probably not necessary. There's certainly no harm in retaking the Exam - and you can always 'cancel' (or simply refuse to report) a 2nd result if you are not happy with it. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better).

There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

Consider checking the mba website for more details. You can also check your mba account to see the options you have for the 720 Online you recently got.
