My background:
Indian, 32 years of age, mechanical engineer, working in Petroleum Industry in India for the last 9.5 years.
Took the GMAT on 27th May and scored a 720 (Q49, V40).
This was my second attempt and in my first attempt, I had managed a 680 (Q49, V34). I started preparing in June last year and was targeting a 730. I was good at quant because of my engineering background and hence, I focused majorly on verbal only. I watched all the “Thursdays with Ron” Videos on SC. RON is a legend. I feel his videos are THE best resource for SC if not for verbal overall.
Before my first official attempt, I took 4 official mocks and my scores were:
Official Mock 1 - 08/July/2022 : 670 (Q49, V32)
Official Mock 2 - 15/Aug/2022 : 710 (Q49, V36)
Official Mock 5 - 21/Aug/2022 : 640 (Q49, V28)
Official Mock 3 - 13/Oct/2022 : 680 (Q49, V33)
Attempt 1 - 03/Nov/2022 - 680 (Q49, V34).I Ordered an ESR and noticed where I was lacking. Performance on sub-sections was :
SC : 90th Percentile; CR : 53rd Percentile; RC : 34th Percentile
After some introspection, started my prep again in Jan’23. I started reading articles from
The Economist. Also purchased Forumquiz and started solving LSAT & the official questions. Followed this schedule for the next few months.
Around the end of April 2023, I saw my friend’s post (didn’t know that he too was preparing) in the study buddies group that he was at 720 and looking for a study buddy. So I called him up. We started having Zoom sessions daily evening after I would return from work. Since we both had exhausted official material, we focused entirely on LSAT problems. We noticed our accuracy improved to around 70% in CR and RC on 95% hard problems. My friend took the online exam on 22nd May and I decided to attempt an official mock at the same time. He scored a 740 (Q49, V41) and I scored a 750 (Q49, V42).
Official Mock 4: 22/May/2023 : 750 (Q49, V42)
Looking at my score, my friend insisted that I should also take an official attempt as soon as possible. So I took the online exam for Saturday evening and scored a 720.
Attempt 2: 27/May/2023 : 720 (Q49, V40)I am a little disappointed as I did not manage my time well. I had 6 minutes left for 6 questions and an RC passage showed up & it took me around 5 minutes for 3 RC questions. For last 3 questions (2 CR and one SC) I had less than one minute left so had to mark randomly to complete the test. Took the rest of the test thinking that I have screwed my attempt again. But the result was not as bad as I had anticipated.
Not sure if a 720 would be good enough for the kind of profile I have, so probably will take the exam again to improve my score by 20-30 points (improve 1 point each in verbal and quant).
To Summarise:
1) Practicing problems is the key.
One thing I have noticed on this forum is that Practice is underrated and Reviewing is overrated. Practice tons of problems, review, and do them again. At this point, I have solved more than 2000 CR problems from various resources.
FORUM QUIZ is a great resource for practicing. STAMINA and TIME MANAGEMENT play a very important role in the official test.
2) Having a
Study Buddy can work wonders. I Wouldn’t be even close to 720 otherwise.
3)
LSAT questions for CR and RC are a fantastic additional resource. The language of LSAT questions is different from GMAT problems but the underlying logic is often as good as it is in GMAT questions. The number one resource is, of course, official problems. Also, If your CR improves, RC will automatically improve.
4)
For SC: Ron’s videos & Manhattan SC guide. Watch/read multiple times. No other resource is required.
