Hey everyone,
I would like to share my GMAT story here. I hope it will be useful.
Background
I graduated from a top-tier Ukrainian mathematical high school in 2017 and decided to pursue my bachelor’s degree in international economics. When I was close to my graduation, I decided to pursue my master’s degree in finance from a top-tier university in Europe / US, and therefore, I had to pass the GMAT exam with a decent score.
1st GMAT Test
I took my first official mock in August 2021 to identify my starting ability. I was overwhelmed by the exam, especially by the Verbal section. It was hard to comprehend even TOEFL/IELTS reading passages, so when I faced the GMAT-style questions, I was completely smashed. My final score was 500 (Q42, V14).
Pause of Preparation
Between August 2021 and April 2022, I was not preparing for the GMAT at all, given that I began to work full-time as a corporate finance analyst after graduation, and the first months were intense in terms of the workload. Moreover, I decided to focus on improving my English skills first and prepare for the TOEFL exam.
e-GMAT 360
Based on the positive reviews and video interviews on YouTube, I bought e-GMAT 360 subscription to continue my GMAT preparation. I took my first e-GMAT Sigma-X mock and scored 570 (Q42; V25).
Verbal Section
I started my preparation with the Verbal section of the exam because I was weak in Verbal, and therefore more motivated to improve my Verbal reasoning abilities. The first subsection I took was Master Comprehension. This section was relatively short and improved my general reading skills. Then I proceeded to the CR section. E-GMAT explanations for the theoretical part are profound and allowed me to improve my understanding of argument structure and what needs to be challenged in the argument. After completing the theoretical part, I began to solve cementing quizzes. I failed Medium Cementing for the first time and went to OG quizzes as it was advised by e-GMAT. After completing a couple of OG quizzes and reviewing everything thoroughly, I passed the medium cementing. Then I passed Hard Cementing with the same approach and a lot of OG questions. After completing the CR section, I moved to SC and RC sections which were easier to master. I passed these sections in the same way. Firstly, I went through the theoretical parts, then cementing stages. When I failed any cementing stage, I solved OG questions and moved back.
Quant Section
When I finished the Verbal section, I proceeded to the Quant part. I skipped only some files that introduced basic math concepts. In general, quant preparation went more smoothly than the preparation for verbal since I was stronger in quant and just needed to fill the gaps. Only the last topic devoted to permutations and combinations was new to me. I struggled with it as it was tricky to apply the proper formula to any given situation. However, after analyzing my mistakes and doing a lot of OG questions, I finally scored 80% accuracy in the Hard Cementing Quiz.
Review Stage
I was contacted by Rida, Senior Consultant at e-GMAT, who designed a review strategy for me to get ready for the test. I was mainly completing a lot of mixed quizzes (RC+CR, CR+SC, RC+SC, etc.) from OG and Scholaranium. Then I took three mocks on GMAT website and scored 750, 730, and 760. Rida also sent me a template for the AWA section of the exam. I didn’t prepare too much for AWA. I just reviewed the template and examples of good essays for AWA.
Test Day
I scheduled my test for the 29th of April 2023. I was not sure about a lot of the questions in Verbal and felt that I was going to fail the Verbal part by scoring somewhere around 35-37. The key decision was not to overthink and concentrate on the Quant section. There was no point in being nervous about the answers that I couldn’t change. Fortunately, I scored 760 (Q50, V42).
Takeaways
The takeaway I would like to highlight is obvious – it is the key to believe that you can score high. Moreover, I spent most of my time not even solving questions – but reviewing them thoroughly. This approach enabled me to build proper skills and then apply them during the real exam. I say a big thank you to the e-GMAT team and especially to Rida for guiding me!
