Hi All,
Today I have finished my second attempt and got a 750 (Q49/V42/IR8). I had tears when I saw this on screen. Also just 16 days back when I took my first attempt I got a 680(Q50/V31) and literally cried for an entire day. But I know that 680 is no where near my skill levels and hence immediately booked my next slot without even thinking twice.
Where did I spoil my first attempt and suggestions out of it -
Though might not be the same for everyone, First question of SC generally felt difficult for me. The same happened in both the exams. First question was SC and the question tests nothing. It is just construct that is tested and we need to choose the most concise one despite every option grammatically right. In the first exam, I spent 2.5 minutes in that question and which spoilt the entire verbal exam later. In the second exam though, because of my learning in the first exam, I just marked and moved on.
Also, RC are not as small as they appear in any of the mocks. In both my attempts I got one RC with 5 paragraphs, one with 4, one with 3 and the other with 2. So try to finish mocks in 60min only. This will help have extra time in the main exam. Please ensure not to take more than 3 min on any question.
One last thing for non-native speakers (Not sure of native speakers) - Even after preparing for the entire year, you will still never be 100% confident in any verbal question if you don't trust yourself. Have courage to select the answer and move on instead of just sitting on same question and waste minutes. Once your approach is right you will get the answers automatically right. Learning the approach is what is most important.
Quants can wildly swing from easy to difficult and yes it depends on luck. First attempt I wrote, quant was so easy that I finished with 13min left. Except for 3 questions every other question was dead easy. But in the second attempt I had to guess the last 2 questions. Main reason was that around 14 questions were of inequalities and absolute values. So please be thorough of every topic and don't leave any topic behind. If luck is not your side it might turn up that half the questions would be from that topic only.
Preparation Material and Mock ScoresOG is the best source and has questions that are closest to the main exam. GMAT Club and
bb are gold mine of GMAT and there is no better source than this. The material they are giving for free is just unbelievable. Nothing can thank them enough for what they are doing. Please watch all the youtube videos they have on their channel and if needed still, any course in the market can help prepare concepts. Please do not waste official questions or mocks until the concept is very clear. Solve every question with a detailed analysis (you get it right or wrong, still do it). Start mocks only once confident.
There is one more website called GMAT KMF, where we can get around 30 mocks free which are as well very close to main exam. (Subtract 30 points from the score you get here as they are slightly easier, also these are not computer adaptive.)
Below were my mock exam scores in the order
Official Mock 1 - 570 (Q48/V something in 20s) (Before my preparation began)
Official Mock 2 - 730 (Q49/V40)
MGMAT 1 - 690 (Q47/V37)
MGMAT 2 - 710 (Q48/V38)
MGMAT 3 - 680 (Q47/V36)
MGMAT 4 - 680 (Q47/V36)
KMF Prep 1 - 740 (Q50/V40)
KMF Prep 1 - 770 (Q51/V42)
KMF Prep 3 - 770 (Q51/V42)
MGMAT 5 - 680 (Q47/V36)
MGMAT 6 - 720 (Q47/V41)
Most of my preparation went on youtube videos in GMAT club. For Quant - Videos of Saquib (
GMAT Whiz), Aditya Kumar (Crack Verbal) are the best. For Verbal - Videos of Marty Murray(TTP) are the best. There are many more which we can test.
By the what I did nothing in 16 days gap from attempt 1 and attempt 2 ? - Nothing .. Just solved very easy questions and gained confidence. In reality a good 90% accuracy in questions around 45% range difficulty would easily help cross 700 on GMAT. Just a little confidence would push everything.
On the exam when you see a good score on the screen, remember you achieved it. Be proud of it. If the score comes low, remember you have one more attempt.
I also wanted to confirm with experts if there would be any change from official and unofficial score. Because Q49/V42 shows 720 on GMAT charts of all top companies but my score was at 750.
- It would be of great help if someone can confirm on this part.
