I recently decided to go part time in my job to focus on the GMAT (30 hours per week) and will focus on trying to get a better score. I am only looking for an above average score (maybe around 580-600), but am a bit frustrated. I am taking the Veritas class in Palo Alto. Is that pretty bad for my first practice exam? I am going to work hard over the next three months to improve my score, but do you guys think it is doable to at least improve by say 100 points or so?

Please provide some advice!

In 3 months, everything up to 650 is quite doable. 700+ is hardcore, but if you die over the handbooks, you may do it as well.

Just don't chill - make up a prep plan, get down crunching problems, and don't give up.

100 point increase is definitely doable. Just make a practical yet rigorous plan and stick to it.

It is definitely doable - was that a GMATPrep Exam, Powerprep or a test company exam?

I would check out the GMAT Experience/Inspirational thread for some examples of people who have done what you are about to attempt...it will help guide you and motivate you.

it was a gmat prep one. is that a good indicator of my abilities? i did equally bad on both parts. i'm concerned about that, because at least some people excel on the verbal or math. i have no excuses.

Yeah, GMATprep is a very good indicator of where you are. So you really have no excuses and will have to work like a slave :) I know this doesn't sound very reassuring, but I believe it's better to get a fair picture.
