Took the GMAT friday and got a very disappointing 670 (Q48, V34)
Study schedule:
-5 months to -1 month:
very casual studying. maybe 3-4 hours/week
I have a demanding full time job and I take masters classes, so i did not have much time.
-1 month to test day:
intense studying. about 3-4 hours/day
Practice tests:
GMAT prep1: 750 (50Q, 42V)
finished math right on time
finished verbal right on time
(missed about 1/2 of the SC problems and only 1 RC problem)
GMAT prep2: 710 (49Q, 38V i think)
finished math with 12 min left
finished verbal with 10 min left
(missed about 1/2 of the SC problems and only 1 RC problem)
Gameday:
0 sleep the night before.
I got to the test center 45 min early.
This place was as secure as NSA headquaters.
I had to get my thumb scanned every time i entered or left the testing room.
Video cameras at every station.
The proctor was behind a glass case monitoring the room.
I guess i did ok on the essays. I looked at AWA strategies for the first time the night before the test. I really wasnt too concerned.
I got to the math section and i just froze.
I dont know what happened. I guess i was just very nervous.
It took me a very long time to do even simple computations, and i think i blindly guessed 2 of the first 10.
I also remember selecting E on one of the DS questions because my answer to the problem was "no."
As you all know, if you can determine that the answer is"no," you do not select E!!!
I flew through the first 1/2 of the verbal section and started getting complacent.
I did like 5 of the next questions with my hands behind my head, leaning back in the chair.
Mental stamina then became an issue. Up until that point on the GMAT, i had never in my life had a mental endurance problem.
You know the feeling you get aftre running several miles? You just want to stop and lay on the ground...Well it felt like that.
I had to randomly guess the last 3 questions.
When i took my practice tests, I did not stick to the 5 min break rule. Instead i took a much longer break..That is going to change.
My stats are:
3.4 electrical engineering BS from good/large state school
MS in math at top 15 school (will graduate before fall 08)
670 gmat.
I prob wont get into a top 16 (my cutoff is carnegie mellon/cornell) with that, so i have to retake the test.
I look forward to round 2. I will not be nervous, and i expect a score of 700+
