Hi all, hope everyone is hanging in there!
I just took the GMAT Focus and got 675 (Q83, V86, D81). 96th percentile. Rushed application timeline, so this was after 2 months of prep, including preparing all my other application materials, and one test attempt two weeks prior (jumped from 625 to 675 since then).
I was hoping to use this 675 score for Round 1 applications for M7 schools (deadline in the next 1-2 weeks), but now I’m considering applying Round 2 instead and retaking the GMAT in late fall to aim for 99th percentile. Thoughts on either choice?
My profile: nontraditional applicant, international background, humanities major with 3.6 GPA at top US school, career in marketing at nonprofits, founded and grew my own nonprofit initiative steadily and successfully.
MBA goal: social impact and entrepreneurship path.
Strength: Unique, passionate story.
Weakness: Not much leadership in traditional fulltime jobs, several junior roles. Some employment gaps and job hopping. A few low grades in quant electives in college. Plus, low SES background and I support my family, so I need a full ride to be able to pursue an MBA.
Since my post high school career doesn’t have much evidence of quantitative skills (marketing jobs) and my college transcript may raise questions, I want to increase Quant and DI. An analytical thinker, I had a strong math background up until college (mathletes, awards, etc), so thinking I can get a higher score with two more months of practice, especially if I can manage time better in DI and stop guessing the last few questions. But setting aside the opportunity cost of dedicating more time and resources to GMAT, reducing my chances of admission with fewer spots in R2 worries me. I’m concerned that I might be motivated more by ego than rational reasoning when I have an acceptable score and a mostly ready application.
Having said all of this, polishing essays more in the next few months can never hurt, and studying for GMAT has been weirdly fun. Will need to decide in the next few days to notify my recommenders. Would love any advice or thoughts.
