Hello Everyone,
I took the GMAT on September 4th, 2024, and unfortunately, I didn’t perform as expected. I scored 595 (69th percentile), with Q80, V80, and D79. In my practice tests, I consistently scored between 645-675, except for one mock test about 45 days ago, where I also scored 595.
My target score range was 655-695, and I attempted the exam in the following order: QA-DI and VA.
QA: 16 correct, 64%ile
DI: 14 correct, 70%ile
VA: 17 correct, 57%ile
I’m attaching screenshots of my accuracy and timing performance. Here’s how the exam went:
Quantitative Reasoning:Challenging/tricky word problems have never been my strength. Despite practicing a lot to improve this area, the first question on the exam was a tricky word problem. I spent more than 2 minutes on it, eventually guessing the answer, which—surprisingly—was correct. However, I panicked after that, and it affected my overall exam performance. From questions 13 to 20, I faced three more tricky word problems and got all of them wrong, further hurting my confidence during the exam.
Data Insights (DI):I carried my lack of confidence into the second section. I wasn’t confident at all during this part, so I was surprised to see that I got 14 correct answers. I had expected around 8-9 correct responses. I zoned out at times and struggled with DS and TPA questions, which impacted my overall performance in this section.
Verbal Reasoning (VA):I tried my best in this section and ended up getting 6 questions wrong. I think I missed some easy questions, which negatively impacted my score.
My take:This was my second attempt at the GMAT Focus Edition. In my previous attempt(Jan 2024), I scored 615. I worked hard and prepared for 4 months for this attempt, but I still didn’t achieve my target score.
During the exam, I felt physically and mentally exhausted, I was nervous and it seemed like I had a mental blockage that hindered my performance.
Help Needed:I plan to retake the exam through self-preparation and practice on GMAT Club over the next 3-4 weeks. What should my overall approach and strategy be to improve my score by at least 70-80 points? How can I avoid or handle such panic situations in my next attempt? I would truly appreciate your guidance.
