Hello GMAT Club community!
I'm thrilled to share my GMAT journey with you all. I recently scored a 655 on the GMAT Focus Edition, achieving Q85, V82, and DI80. Starting from a 515, this journey has been filled with challenges, breakthroughs, and valuable lessons that I hope will inspire fellow test-takers.
Initial StrugglesMy GMAT journey began with a baseline score of 515. Coming from a non-engineering background, while I was fairly good at math in school, the GMAT posed unique challenges. I decided to enroll in e-GMAT after seeing my cousin's success with the platform.
Verbal Journey: Breaking Through the ConfusionDespite being comfortable with English, I faced significant challenges in the Verbal section. My main struggle was never being fully convinced about answer choices. Even when I selected an option and later learned it was incorrect, I struggled to understand why my choice was wrong. This led me to realize I needed a more structured approach.
Critical Reasoning transformation:
- Initially relied on intuition, leading to confusion between options
- Implemented pre-thinking strategies before looking at answer choices
- Saw improvement from 55% to consistently hitting 70-75% accuracy
- Pre-thinking became second nature and helped eliminate incorrect options efficiently
Reading Comprehension challenges:
- Struggled with complex passages outside my interest areas
- Made subtle assumptions that led to incorrect answers
- Learned to read slowly and consciously, especially for challenging topics
- Focused on understanding sentence structure rather than just words
Quant: The Most Impressive TransformationMy Quant journey saw a remarkable improvement from Q75 to Q85. The key challenges were:
- Time management issues
- "Behavioral errors" (not silly mistakes!)
- Conceptual gaps in certain topics
Breakthrough strategies:
- Focused on topics where I scored lower grades
- Used targeted practice for specific weak areas
- Made a conscious effort to avoid behavioral errors
- Practiced with challenging questions to build time management skills
The most dramatic improvement came in advanced topics, where I went from 10% accuracy on hard questions to consistently scoring 75% accuracy!
Data Insights: Strategic ApproachFor DI, my main challenge was time management during full-length mocks. I developed a strategy of:
- Maintaining high accuracy for attempted questions
- Not hesitating to skip questions I couldn't solve quickly
- Using the review feature effectively to return to skipped questions
- Managing time better by being selective about questions
Mental Conditioning: The Real Game ChangerWhat really set my journey apart was mental conditioning:
- Never saw giving up as an option
- Had a clear goal and deadline
- Understood that if you're truly motivated for your target school, demotivation isn't possible
- Maintained confidence through disappointing mock scores by focusing on effort and progress
Test Day ExperienceOn test day, my practice with challenging questions paid off. I had 11-15 minutes to spare in the Quant section, which allowed me to revisit and correct a difficult question. This extra time proved invaluable for maximizing my score.
Key Takeaways for Future Test-Takers - Don't shy away from challenging practice questions - they prepare you for anything
- Never label errors as "silly mistakes" - treat them as behavioral issues that need fixing
- Mental conditioning is as important as conceptual knowledge
- Have a clear goal and let it drive you through tough times
- Don't get discouraged by low accuracy during practice - focus on learning and improving
Remember, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. When you're at your lowest point (like my 10% accuracy in advanced topics), the only way is up!
Good luck to all test-takers! Feel free to ask any questions - I'm happy to help!
