Hi everyone,
I took the GMAT today and scored 555:
- Verbal: 87 (98th percentile)
- Quant: 76 (approximately 40th percentile)
- Data Insights: 70 (24th percentile)
This was expected to some degree since I mainly took the test to experience the test center environment, but I’m still a bit puzzled about my Quant performance.
Background- I’m Italian (non-native English speaker), so the strong Verbal score surprised me even more.
- After scoring 525 on an official practice test in October (71 Quant, 84 Verbal, 73 Data Insights), I focused almost entirely on Quant for two months (424 hours) using
Target Test Prep (TTP).
- I completed the entire TTP Quant program, including chapter tests and comprehensive reviews, often exceeding the accuracy benchmarks (80-90% on medium questions, 60-70% on hard ones).
However, timing remained an issue. In custom tests, I averaged a little bit more than 2 minutes per question (around 2.16). I only started working on official questions about 4 days before the test and haven’t done much for Data Insights yet.
I also haven’t taken any additional full-length practice tests since the one in October. I was concerned about “wasting” them, thinking I might need them for a potential retake, so I decided to conserve them.
Test Day
I chose the following order:
1. Verbal
2. Quant
3. Data Insights (took a break before DI).
Quant felt much harder than expected, almost as if I were seeing questions in a format I hadn’t practiced. Is it possible that my strong Verbal score made the Quant section more difficult? I’m not sure how the GMAT algorithm works in this regard.
Next Steps
I won’t be able to dedicate as much time to the GMAT for the next 6 weeks because of university exams. I’ll aim for 1-2 hours a day until mid-February, after which I’ll go back to full-time prep. I plan to retake the test mid-March as I need it for applications by the end of March.
My goal is to achieve a score above 645, so I really need to improve both Quant and Data Insights.
Questions- Has anyone experienced difficulty transitioning from TTP to official GMAT questions?
- How should I adjust my prep, especially for Quant and Data Insights, given my time constraints?
- Could the strong Verbal performance have impacted Quant difficulty?
I want to stress that this isn’t a critique of TTP—I found the course excellent overall. I just need advice on how to close this gap and improve for my retake.
Thanks in advance for your help!
