Most people dont know this or don't put in the effort but a good flashcard system can make your score jump by 50-100 points
Why do flashcards help? The GMAT is a time pressured exam and every question can be broken down into a series of decisions/actions to take. If it takes you 30 seconds to remember how to approach a certain type of question, or to remember a particular formula, you're going to struggle to solve questions within the average 2mins target. This snowballs into having to rush / guess a few questions and quickly adds up
What does a good flashcard look like?- Has two sides (a side with the memory trigger, a hidden side with the thing you are trying to remember).
It's important to separate the two otherwise you'll just be reading notes and not really memorizing things!
- The front side is very specific about the context (could be a question you did in your preparation) and what you're trying to remember (e.g. how should i
start this question?)
- The back side should be very short. It's not about redoing the whole question!!! 1-2 points max. If you need to remember more, split it into several flashcards
You can make flashcards on theory / formulas but
try to have most of your flashcards on specific steps or mistakes you made on Official Guide questions (e.g. what should i have done here and why? what mistake did i make here?). The goals
Don't hesitate to edit / tweak your flashcards as you go. The more you edit them, redo them, the faster you'll learn them! How to review flashcards- Try to spend at least 5mins every day (frequency is key, 5mins a day is better than a 1h block every week!)
- Always keep them in an order and review the one at the top next
- If you remember the back of the flashcard within a few seconds, put it at the back of the pile (that way you wont repeat it until a few days)
- If you can't remember it at all, put it a few cards behind (close to the front) so that you review it again soon
- If you remember it but with a bit of effort, put it in the middle!
This is the principle of repetitive learning, it's shown to be very effective at learning new things. If you prefer to use an app. Something like AnkiWeb will manage this for you!
