The most important thing is an honest self assessment of where you are at right now. GMAT is all about practice, so you need to know just how much practice you require to get to your desired level.
Perhaps do some practice work for a week, get familiar with the problem types and take a GMATPrep test. This is the most accurate indicator of your current level.
Then take it from there. It is pretty easy to work out what your weak areas are.
Also participate in the forums, post interesting problems and solutions to other peoples problems.

I am just strarting my prep for the GMAT and wanted to get an idea of how many hours people have studied. I know it will vary from person to person but I think being a average Joe it would be in the same ball park.
As you can probably guess just like many others I am aspiring for the ever elusive 700+ club.
