Hey all,
I found this website a while ago through Google, and I browsed the forums on occasion to get a feel for the test and what people felt was important. Now that I've taken it, I felt it would only be right for me to share what I learned.
Materials I used:
Official Guide
GMATPrep Software
The Official Guide was great for going through batches of problems, then analyzing your mistakes. The fact that they are ordered by difficulty helps as well.
I used the GMATPrep software to get a feel for the format and to diagnose my weaknesses in a more applicable environment than problem sets.
The Result:
49Q/47V/760/6.0
The impressions/tips:
The GMATprep software was invaluable in getting used to the test format. Use it and become comfortable with it.
On the essays, spend a few minutes brainstorming before you start typing. I read the essay topic, reread what I was expected to answer, and then laid a mental framework for how to attack the essay. You may want to jot key points down on your scratchpad to make sure you include them. After finishing the question, reread the prompt and your essay to make sure you stayed on topic.
Quant:
Look for possible tricks in the question. Units, misleading measurements or diagrams, etc. A couple of times I got halfway through solving a problem before realizing that I wasn't solving for what the question asked. Save yourself the time and frustration and make sure you know exactly what the question says.
On the Data Sufficiency, write out the answers and cross them out as you eliminate them. In the middle of solving all of the pieces, you can lose track of where you are.
Know your geometry/algebra concepts & formulas. This is a big piece.
Verbal:
On sentence correction, use the process of elimination that you used in DS. Once you settle on an answer, read it in your head to make sure it sounds correct.
In the 'strengthen/weaken/support/refute' analysis questions, read the statement, read the question, and go through the answers. As you do, analyze each answer and determine how it applies to the situation. Answers may seem similar until you dig into them.
Overall:
Use your breaks! It's good to get away from the screen and testing environment. Get a drink, walk around, stretch, use the bathroom...calm down and get ready for the next section.
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have
