I am working my way through the OG with the MGMAT SC book. I am doing quite well with the answers, but as I read the explanations I generally do not understand the reasoning. Is it much more beneficial to be familiar with the technical reasons why this sentence does not work? Should I be saying in my head that answer B is incorrect because it begins with a prepositional phrase, etc.? I find myself just saying that this sentence doesn't sound right and move on. I realize that with more practice I will recognize this sentence as an idiom problem or that one as parrallelism, but what about the grammer, should I be able to recognized that this word is improperly modifying that noun, etc?

Buddy you need to learn grammar otherwise you will lose when faced with problems of above average difficulty. Those sentences will itself be so awkward that they will always sound bad. So do not rely on sound. Get the MGMAT SC guide and follow one chapter at a time. Make sure after completing the chapter you do finish the SCs from OG as mentioned at the end of chapter. Spend around 3 days in finishing one chapter (completed with OG questions). This will reinforce your basics in SC. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I think the problem with the "just knowing what sounds right" approach is that it takes a lot of experience and time, the latter usually being in short supply when preparing for the GMAT.
I wouldn't worry so much about being able to name what the problem is (e.g. dangling modifier, parallelism, etc.), but just being able to identify that an error exists.
