I took my GMAT yesterday and scored 570 (Q35 V34).Although my score is no where compared to the the 700+ scores that members on this site have achieved, I thought of sharing my GMAT experience since this site has provided me a lot of tips which I am thankful for.
I have been studying for GMAT on and off since 2003. I never felt prepared enough to give
the GMAT, but this year after support and encouragement from my wife i booked the GMAT
appointment and studied with a focus. Here is the list of resources i used for my GMAT.
1) Official Guide to GMAT (10th and 11th). I mostly used the 10th since i had that book
since 2004. I bought the 11th edition just 2 weeks before my exam after reading posts on
this site. In my opinion, the 11th ed is more relevant for today's GMAT.Wish i had bought
that much earlier.
2) GMATPrep tests- I took them several times. On my last 2 attempts I got scores of 620 and
640. But i think the scores were skewed because some of the questions had appeared in my
prior takes of GMATPrep and so I knew the right answer.
3)
MGMAT free CAT - I took this test the day before my exam and scored 640. Based on this score, i was hoping to get in the range of 600-640 in my actual GMAT, but as you can see i scored lower!!
4)
MGMAT Sentence correction - I found this book to be the most valuable resource for SC.
In my intital phases of study without this book, i had no clue as to what is right or wrong
wrt SC. I credit this site with having helped me find this valuable resource.
5) GMAT Preparation course at Cal Poly Pomona - This is a california state university
program for GMAT prep. I didn't find this much useful except that it helped gain focus in my
gmat preparation.
6) Free CATs from Kaplan, Peterson's and 800 score.com. Kaplan CAT was good. Also, the
Peterson's CD that came with the book had some good Math questions, similar to the ones i
saw on my GMAT.
7) Thomson Arco's book for AWA - Very useful. I was never good in writing essays, but this
book gave me a good deal of confidence. The essays in this book and the strategies suggested are valuable.
8) Other books like Cliff Note's, Arcgo Gold 2005 etc.
I could have done better on my Quant section by taking more CATs i feel. In retrospection,I
feel that I goofed up on some the relatively easy questions - may be because I starting
getting tense after the 10th question. GMAT needs a lot of mental stamina - the only way to
gain this stamina is by taking more and more mock tests. I would recommend the
MGMAT CATs. I just took the free test on their site, but judging by its quality and its similarity to actual GMAT, i feel i should have bought the 4 test set for $39 atleast a week before my test.
For future gmat takers, my suggestion is
1) Practice as many CATs as you can.
2) Solve all problems in OG 11 - Diagnostic test is useful too.
3) Use the
MGMAT SC book for SC section of GMAT.
4) Practice Probability questions - I got 3 of them in my test.
5) Develop mental stamina
All the best to you all. Thanks for the valuable tips on this forum.
