Hi all, I took my GMAT last week and scored 690 (Q42, V44) for a total 88 percentile.
My practice tests ranged from 670 to 720, so my score is smack dab in the middle - my Quant, however, was much lower than I had done on practice (63 percentile on GMAT, 73%-79% on ManhattanGMAT and GMATPrep).
So, while I am a little disheartened to find my score to be SO close (and yet so far away), I'm relatively encouraged by the fact that, (1) in a pinch, I can use the 690 and can take some classes to build an alternative transcript for Quant, and that (2) I have the ability to score higher if I just maintain Verbal and improve on Quant.
I'm also applying in Fall of '09 for matriculation in Fall of '10, so I'm not (as) pressed for time.
My current plan is to take a break from studying, then go back into it with some bottoms-up math tutoring with a goal of getting around 70%+ in Quant on the second attempt.
Does anyone have advice about the structure of Quant tutoring? I'm thinking of doing 1 hr of tutor a week, then maybe 2 hrs of homework. So, 3 hours total from September til February. Then in late February (when work dies down a little), I'm planning on kicking up the prep to 10-12 hrs a week, and then retake the test in April.
Some notes about the experience:
1. I did not expect my heart to beat so rapidly! Seriously - it was so loud!
2. I had to tell myself to stay focused on Verbal - because I can feel my brain going la-la-la towards the middle.
3. Timing was okay, but I did run out of time towards the last problem. If I had 1 more minute, I could've solved it. This has taught me that questions I just could not solve? Toss it. Because I sure could've used those 20 extra seconds I spend agonizing over some hard problems.
4. Know the basics, especially for Quant. What're the most popular Pythagorean Triangles, what's 2^6, etc. They would've saved me precious seconds that, again, I could've used.
