Just took the exam -- 680... of course, I am depressed -- although I should have seen this coming. I basically studied / practiced, seriously, for only 2/2.5 weeks. Took my first mock test MGMAT a couple of days ago (actually).
MGMAT 1 - 680 (was pretty happy with this as I had heard that MGMATs ar pretty tough)
MGMAT 2 - 630
GMATPrep 1 - 700
I did all the questions in the OG-11. Apart from that I also did all the questions in the Verbal Review and the Manhattan courseware for SC and CR. I knew my Verbal was going to hit me, but was hopeing I can manage a decent score in quant to inch upwards of 700.
Damn!!!!
I am targeting one of the top 10 schools (may be I should start using the "was targeting" terminology now). ;).. I am seriously confused whether I should take the test again, or just live with 680 and put a better effort in the rest of the application. I have a masters degree in science from one of the top schools in the US, and an engineering degree from India from a decently ranked institution. Even if I was to decide to re-take the test, does taking practice tests improve your score that much? If I was to take it again, I would definitely want to target more than 730/740!
Any advise from the people on this forum would be greatly appreciated. Some say that in this economy, a sub-700 score will make it difficult to get into top schools. :(

Well personally speaking, from a 'score' perspective 680 is good enough, except for schools such as Wharton - which are strict about the 80th percentile balance. However it all depends on what demographics you are from and your peer population scores. Guessing from your name that your from the Indian subcontinent - well look at most Indians - they score in the 92nd percentile - so that might be the only concern. I wouldn't hesitate to retake if you are aiming top 10 programs. Of course, GMAT is JUST a portion of your application package, a lot depends on your leadership story and potential.
So another way of looking at it would be - if you are a charismatic leader, who can motivate people to do great things - who really cares about your GMAT - I mean your intellectual abilities. But if you are such a leader why will you need a b-school education ? Did anyone ever question the intellectual abilities of Martin Luther King was or Mahatma Gandhi was ( I mean they were top notch of course ) ? I hope you get my point ... if you can convince the adcoms that you are a great leader, they won't really bother much about the scores.

What you said sounds reasonable. Just that I am not sure how I can improve my verbal score. I mean, my spoken and written English is fine... in fact, its better than many Indians (so I have been told), but just that I don't *test* very well --- I had screwed my GRE as well because of the damned verbal section... but back then, I still managed to get into a top university here.
If I was to re-take the test, how do you suggest I prepare in order to improve my score substantially. I believe I can improve my quant too, given I practiced quant for only 3 days, and still managed 48. Is it just about taking practice test after practice test?
