Hi,

Kaplan's tests are notoriously misrepresentative of student performance. There does seem to be some incentive to under-predict student performance and thereby encourage students to seek further help. To be fair, some students find these tests useful in part because they at least resemble the real test. I guess you could also say that dirt resembles chocalate because they are both brown . . .

Whether its Kaplan or Princeton or timbaktoo prep, never rely on any practise test score to tell you how good or bad you are doing. My max score on kaplan EVER was 590. but i ended up with 710. Everyone's experience is different, but in general, i am sure everyone will agree that Kaplan Math questions are great for practise. I dont particularly like Kaplan RC. Kaplan SC/CR is ok, nothing great.

If you are feeling great about your math prep, try kaplan and see how you do. Dont worry at all if you dont do well. Make sure you analyze every practise test performance.

I got some time to kill, please allow me to ramble a bit.. it might help the new guys

IMO, Practise tests serve these purposes.

1. Improve your stamina/concentration
You have to take the test of 4 hours. the more practise you have and the more mentally prepared you are, the better.

2. Feel of the real test experience
Take full length practise tests.. that is.. write the essays completely. ( i used to skip essays, but i now feel that its better to have practise with essays). Make sure you take the two practise tests available on the Powerprep CD.

3. Timing (Only ETS)
If you want to check yourself on timing, the powerprep software is your best bet. I know the OG and Powerprep have questions in common. What I recommend is study the OG completely and then try the practise tests on Kaplan. there are lot of drills and short tests on the Kaplan CD that you can use to kinda warm up for the Kaplan tests.

As for the Marketing part, Marketing is full of tricks, some are genuine and then some. We just have to find out if the product works for us. Kaplan sure works , but dont take the scores very seriously. Prep Continuously and study your errors.

Hope this helps

To be fair, I must agree with Praet. that these tests have some utility as practice tests for math as long as one does not take them too seriously as perfect substitutes for the real exam.

I would say they have much more utility than anything right now. OG is so old and easy that it is not that helpful anymore. Having a good kick and harder than usual practice is what I respected in my prep.

Man...these are comforting words for a person like me who is trying hard and yet seeing no improvement in his score. I ended up with a max 570 on the Kaplan tests. I have my GMAT within a week. I already get a feeling that I have lost the battle. :(

Just don't know what to do.. Either God has to be kind that day or my best luck needs to be with me...You guyz have been really helpful and supportive. Thanks.

Guys:
after a long wait, my kaplan book along with CD has arrived. I have a quick question. Do questions given in book under various sections, and also questions in practice drills of quant and verbal section tests in cd rom , repeat in 4 CAT's? It is very important to know otherwise my scores in tests may not refelct my true score.

Add to the list one more Kaplan Practice test casualty ! :beatup

I got a 720 on my Princeton Practice Test yesterday and was feeling mighty fine till I did my first Kaplan Practice test today and got rogered with a mere 590. I remember reading somewhere on this site that the Kaplan tests are notoriously difficult esp in Quant and the scoring system leaves much to be desired.

Maybe it is a marketing ploy and maybe it's not - but its a great kick in the ass if you're nearing your test and tending to slack off. I for one tend to get lazy if I'm doing reasonably well, but this was like diving into ice cold water. I am going to step up my efforts because my rendezvous with the GMAT is exactly a week away on the 21st of October, 2004.

And yes, since the questions are drawn from a question bank on the CD, there is a possibility of them repeating. However, it's my guess that they are not supposed to recur - everytime a practice drill uses a question, my theory is that it gets flagged not to be used again. However, if you reinstall the program or use it on another computer, then there's every chance that a question will recur because the flagging database would not be there. I have installed Kaplan at work and at home, so I'm not too sure where I've seen the questions - but they have recurred for me. If you analyse your performance after every test, just looking at the known question for a second will remind you where the answer is. Not a very good thing - you're not thinking !

But I guess you can't say this too often - analyse your results every time you do a test. It's the only way you weed out certain lingering weak points and make sure you don't make those mistakes again. That done you're all set for success.

Best wishes,
Conal
