After 2 weeks of intense studying, I took the test today and scored 690 (Q50 V32). The irony with this score is that I have NEVER scored above a 640 on any of
MGMAT or GMATPREP tests. As a matter of fact, I was quite discouraged a few days ago when I took my last test and scored a 610 (GmatPrep). I didn't really have much hope for the actual test today and my hope was further shot when I started realizing that the Quant questions were surprisingly easy compared to Kaplan and the
MGMAT questions I had seen during my last 2 weeks of preparation. I must say though that I did focus my efforts on Quant knowing that it was easier to conquer with my engineering background. Anyways, seeing my score was bitter sweet. A part of me was shocked to see a 80 point improvement from my last practice test while a part of me was disappointed for not getting 10 more points and hitting the elusive 700 barrier.
With that said, I need your advice. I have had 7 years of great work experience which has included international work experience and management. Furthermore, I have been actively involved in the community and have started my own startup. I want to get into a Tier-1 program, ideally one of the following: Berkeley, UCLA, Kellogg, Wharton, Dartmouth, Columbia, however I don't know whether I should focus my efforts now on essays and application or if I should retake the test again in 30 days to raise my Verbal score and hopefully ultimately bring my score over the 700 hump. Like everything in life, there is a tradeoff here. How much energy should I spend in taking the test again, and how should I optimize the time spent so that I can increase my verbal while maintaining my Quant and making progress on my essays? I guess I can always apply next year but I wanted to ask you all of your thoughts.
1. Should I retake the test if I want to focus on UCLA and Berkeley this year?
2. If I should retake the exam, what do I need to do to get better at Verbal? Can you suggest any specific thread I can read to rampup on Verbal? As I mentioned earlier, I crammed for the GMAT over the course of the last 2-3 weeks and I definitely feel that I didn't do my due diligence with Verbal. With that said, how would you suggest approaching the beast?
The last few weeks have been quite the ride. Though I am surprised by my score, I feel that I can definitely do better. What are your thoughts?
I hope that from your input, I can either conclusively decide against taking the test again, or come up with a solid plan to increase my Verbal score while not deflating my Quant, so as to break the 700 barrier.
Thanks everyone!
