I suspect that you simply didn't have enough time to absorb the study material and complete a sufficient amount of questions. What materials did you use? For verbal, I would recommend:

1. Manhattan SC - The best out there. Read this book at least twice. If you have time, read it one again!
2. Powerscore CR or LR - These two guides are the best on the market for this topic. Either one is fine, but you might need the LR book; it's longer and more difficult.
3. Powerscore RC - Although an LSAT book, this guide is better than the Manhattan version. It's quite large, but it will help you to become a more active reader.
4. OG Verbal - Do all of the questions and read the answer explanations in the back, including why the others were wrong.
5. GMAT Fiction - Extra reading will help you to increase your speed and be more comfortable for the verbal section. It's kind of similar to vitamins; you may not experience any obvious, outward gains, but you will benefit.
6. GMATClub Forums - There are so many free verbal practice questions and discussions about them. Take advantage of this. When you post your answer, explain why your choice is correct and the other options are wrong. Even if you simply repeat what previous posters have already typed, put it in your own words. Trust me, it helps.

Good luck! :)
