Hello,

I took the GMAT in Aug. and Dec. of 2007 as I was graduating college. I am almost 99% certain that my scores were 670 and 690 respectively. I applied to a few schools for the heck of it and actually got a phone interview with Carnegie Mellon Tepper, but alas, was rejected and was told to get a few years work experience. Well, it's been a few years and I've accomplished a few great things in my career (IMO) that will really help me get in to business schools. So I called GMAT and asked that they resend me copies of my GMAT scores, and to my surprise my scores were 640 and 660! This is 30 points lower than I remember!

Is it possible for the GMAT to lower your score after two years? I read the fine print and it says that the scores represent my position among the average test takers from the last three years, so is it possible that people are getting better at the GMAT and my scores got lowered? I'm really pissed, because a 690 is a fairly decent score for some T15 programs, but a 660 is pushing it.

Help?!?! I'm going to call some of the schools that I applied to and see if I can retrieve my old application. Maybe I can prove that my scores are higher than GMAT is currently reporting?

Did you talk to the people at GMAT?

Do you still have documentation of your original scores?

umm i'm pretty sure gmac doesn't accidentally record the wrong score for you. it's not like somebody could make a typo on the master gmat score excel file and screw you over.

just retake if needed.

Dayne - no I haven't talked to the people at GMAT yet. I wanted to find proof before I called them. There's a very good chance that I misremembered my scores, but I'm sooooo certain that I had a 690, I'm positive of it.

Taylor - I agree. I don't think anyone's screwing me over or anything. My first reaction to seeing my scores was, "Whoa, they must have adjusted my scores down because people are doing better on the GMAT now. After all, it does say that my score is calculated on a three year average of test takers."

I just posted on here because I wanted to know if it was common for scores to be adjusted around years after taking the test. I'll dig in to this and let you guys know what I find out. I probably just misremembered it or something, but it's so weird, I've never been more sure that I got a 690 - weird.

i think it might be you misremembering with all those practice CATs you probably been taking then? Could you try to find your past apps and see what the score were? That is probably your best chance unless you kept your score copy in storage somewhere...

yea; either way, your percentages are at the time you took the test. whether it's 80th percentile in 2006 (640? taking the percentages of 2004-06) or 80th percentile in 2010 (650? taking the percentages of 08-10) it really doesn't matter since your score is an accurate snapshot of how you did when you took it. people can submit scores up to 5 years old so the numbers have to be fairly constant. it might be harder now to get a 660 then it was in 2006, who knows.

either way 660 isn't too shabby, but it's almost impossible that they recorded the wrong score. regardless, when you send schools the official score reports, thats the number they send so youre stuck with it.

you probably got a 690 on the last gmat prep you took and are just confusing them =/
