hey guys, I am really bummed. Got a 680 (47M, 35V)
I took the gmat a total of 4 times. In 570 (in 05'), 670 (in 06') (breakdown 49M, 32V), 690 (in 06') (breakdown 47M, 38V).
At the time i was thinking about going to business school but ended up not going due to my lack of work experience. I am 7 years out of undergrad, however,I basically have 2 years of full work experience and spent another few years cumulatively, laid off or sick or doing part time work. The 2 years of full work experience are in equity research for well known middle market firms although the experience is not smooth due to layoffs (07/08). At the end of 08, I was laid off and have been unable to find full time work. Since I was laid off, Ive been working part time for an investment firm and wanted to give the gmat another shot because my exams were expiring and to improve my chances. I graduated from a top 30 university with a 3.3gpa (also not smooth due to retakes and W's). I am not sure what to do anymore. I was aiming high but I think I would be happy at bottom top 20 schools.
Here is my debreif:
I signed up for a late afternoon session because there were no other spots. The people that admin these testing centers are lazy not that it really affected me, but one guy just closed his eyes like he was taking a nap and didnt see me raise my hand. AWA was nothing out of the ordinary.
I took my break. 8 minutes was really short because 2-3 minutes are spent asking for time, checking out and checking in. They have these finger/hand scanners that are really annoying.
Math: The first question was an inequality that I had no idea. I spent 2 minutes, guessed and moved on. Overall I felt comfortable. The Math seemed easier than gprep. I was surprised to score that low however and had to guess on the last 2 problems.
Verbal: The SC’s were very tricky. I felt that SC was a great strength of mine. I had combed thru much of the SC material extensively and felt that I greatly improved. However, some of these, I completely had no idea, having to choose between 2-3 answers. CR was fair, very similar to OG, maybe a bit easier. RC was cake. However, my timing was off and had to guess on the last 5 or so. In retrospect, I should have just canceled the score but felt that I put enough effort into it that I couldn’t bear anymore studying.
I am just really bummed. However, I felt that I exhausted much of the prep material. Materials I used for math were
mgmat guides, all of the OG’s, and gmat prep.
For verbal I used powerscore cr, manhattan sc, lsat rc and cr.
My scores were as follows.
I stuck to gmatprep because I felt they were the closest thing to the real material.
After 4 months of reviewing fundamentals: I took gprep tests and reviewed more fundamentals for 2 months.
Gprep1: 710 (47M, 40V)
Gprep 2: 600 (45M, 28V)-I was disrupted a few times
Gprep 1 retake 740 (50M, 41V)
Gprep 2 retake 690 (48M, 35V)
Gprep 1 retake 2 680 (43M, 40V)
Gprep 2 retake 2 690 (48M, 35V)
Gprep 1 retake 3 760 (49M, 44V)
Gprep 2 retake 3 750 (50M, 41V)
As you can see I am very on and off. So my question now is, Since most of my attempts are expiring, Do admins look at the past 3 attempts only or all the attempts ever taken? What materials can I use now? I know my weakness is verbal. Sometimes im on and sometimes im not. Timing is the biggest issue.
Mgmat and others just dont seem representative however, i have exhausted all real material. Thanks for your help guys!
