Hi Hjort,
I am 24yrs old, female, 2.5 years work experience in a managerial role, including an assignment as the head of a department of around 150 ppl.
GMAT score : 730/97 (49/90Q, 41/93V, 5 AWA);
undergrad GPA :3.7, Chemical Engg. from a premier institute
good extracurricular activities
intending to move from operations to finance
Unfortunately, I had to take a break in my employment for certain health reasons. By the time I join a B-school, the break should be close to 6-8 months.
Is the break a deterrent to B-school admissions? I plan to write about it in all the optional essays.
Would taking up courses (say, in fin or related areas since i plan to switch to finance) help my cause in any way?

I would not be too concerned about the break in employment per se. Schools are generally reluctant to punish someone for not working if the condition of that person's health would make working very difficult.
The problem, however, is that these 6-8 months represent a large percentage of the time after your BS degree. Schools might feel that you need more work experience in general before pursuing an MBA. You can counter this point of view by showing that your prior work experience was of the highest quality and that you have the aptitude to succeed in business school regardless of the nominal level of work experience ( your undergrad and GMAT certainly help in this regard).
It would not be a bad idea to take a few classes in finance and related areas to show that you have a sincere interest in the field.
