I'm finally taking the GMAT tomorrow, and will at long last get a start on applications once it's over. I definitely plan on applying to at least two schools in the second round. However, there are up to 5 total schools that I'm considering applying to, and I don't think that I've given myself enough time to submit strong applications for that many programs.
My question is this, would laddering my apps and applying to 2 or 3 of the programs in the third round be worthwhile? You hear so many people say that third round applications are basically a waste of time that I wonder if it would be wasted effort. If I do go the laddering route, the schools I apply to in the second round will be ultra-elite and possible one elite, while the third round applications would be to one trans-elite school and one or two elite schools.

Here are some scenarios:
a) 5 mediocre applications in R2, 0 in R3
b) 3 strong applications in R2, 0 in R3
c) Laddered: 3 strong applications in R2, 2 strong applications in R3
While a bit of a strawman, I would cross out a) in your case. However, b)and c) are very similar with the only difference being the activity in the third round. This third round activity increases the chance of an acceptance in your portfolio while having virtually no effect on your activity in the second round.
Is this an accurate description in your case?

Hjort, I'm sorry but I don't think I quite understand.
So its better to apply in the 3rd round?
I have yet to take my GMAT (very soon!). Thinking about UCLA (#1 choice), UCI and USC (I'm leaning towards FT programs for all three) Which rounds should I apply to?
