This is a common dilemma for people entering B-school in Canada. I've posed this question to everyone who's willing to listen. I hope I could get some additional insight here on this board. The two schools are very close in terms of ranking and quality. The biggest differences between the two schools as I see it is:
Ivey (1-year program)
-The school has converted to a 1-year program. The program will start for the first time this May.
-Strong Alumni
Rotman (2-year program)
-Strong finance group
-internship opportunity
As background, I'm an engineer looking to switch careers to finance (investment banking or investment management). The obvious choice is Rotman. It'll give me the opportunity to get some experience with the internship and it also has a strong finance group. However, I wonder how important is the internship? Also, can the strong alumni at Ivey compensate for the lack of experience?
On the surface it may look like you can not possible teach the same amount of information in the 1-year program as you can in the 2-year program. However, on closer analysis the in class time between the two programs is not very different. Ivey will have 42 weeks of learning while Rotman's 2-year program has a total of 52 weeks of learning.
In short, I'd like to do the 1-year program for the obvious financial benefit, however I do not want to compromise my chance of getting a good job just for the sake of spending less time in school.
