Let me start of by saying, this is great site with a ton of useful resources.
Hi Hjort! My name is Nick and I am an ungrad student at the University of Baltimore currently studying Business Administration (Concentration in Finacne), and I was wondering if I could run a few quick questions by you?
Info:
Age: 21 years old
Expected graduation date: May or July 2007
Work Experience: Currently working two jobs while attending school full time. I am a Finance Intern at Harbor Hospital/Medstar Health and I also work part time at a local public library.
1.) Is there a potential downfall to applying to business schools before I complete my ungrad degree? Im just really anxious to get the ball started, but some of the schools Im looking at seem to value work experience, especially my # 1 pick, Loyola.
2.) I am looking at a couple different schools in the Baltimore/DC area.
*Loyola (Baltimore) - This is my #1 pick. I really, really want to be a part of this program, but Im not sure if I will have the GMAT score or the GPA to get in.
*Johns Hopkins - Im not very familiar with their MBA program, but its close to me, and their undergrad programs are solid.
*University of Maryland (I know this is a top tier school, but Im thinking it cant hurt to apply)
*University of Baltimore/Towson University joint program - Last choice, Id really prefer to go elswhere.
Do you know anything about Loyola (Baltimore)? If so, how competitive is their program and what would you say is the minimum criteria to receive an interview?
3.) Is there any correlation between SAT scores and GMAT scores? My SAT scores were rather poor, so Im worried Ill do even worse on the GMAT. (SAT score: 620 Math, 520 Verbal, 1140 Total).
4.) Any other suggestions/tips are greatly appreciated. Im really anxious to get the process started. Im even thinking about starting to prepare for the GMAT now (a year or so away from when I plan to take the test).

First, I applaud your foresight in looking ahead to the next stage of your education.
A few questions for you:
What are your long term career goals?
Do you plan to remain in the DC/Baltimore metro area?
1) In general, it is not easy to be admitted directly from college, for the last few decaes anyway. I have helped other young candidates who applied directly and it is requires a lot of hard work and research. Loyola Maryland does seem to accept some students with less than one year of work experience.
2) You have many choices to pick from, especially if you expand your search to the entire DC/Baltimore metro area.
UB Towson and Loyola Maryland- These are good local schools but relatively unknown outside the metro area.
Johns Hopkins is a great university but the MBA program is not accredited by the AACSB.
University of Maryland (Smith) - A school in the Near Elite cluster
Some other schools to consider:
Georgetown- Another Near Elite cluster school that is worth considering
GW- An NEF cluster school
American University (Kogod)
3) There is a correlation between the GMAT and SAT but I would not worry about that too much. After all, your SAT scores were significantly above average, particularly the math.
4) Preparing for the GMAT in advance is a good idea, that way you avoid the need to prepare both the GMAT and the admissions essays at the same time.

Long term career goals? Hmm, thats good question. Im still relatively young, so Im not ready to paint myself into a corner just yet. My dream job would be something along the lines of working for T. Rowe Price as fund manager (or at least part of a team of fund managers). Right now, I have an internship in the finance department at Harbor Hospital, but Im not over enthusiastic about the work. I basically just create Excel spreadsheets relating to the capital and operating budget. But hey, you have to start somewhere, right?
As far as relocating outside of the DC/Baltimore area... Short answer: Not interested. I like it here. Plus, my longterm girlfriend is studying to be a teacher at Towson, and she has no desire whatsoever to relocate.
1) Being accepted right out of undergrad seems like it would be difficult. Maybe I should shoot for being accepted a year or so after completing my undergrad degree? That way I have 2 years work experience (including internship). Would that make a more qualified candidate?
2) Loyola is my absolute number 1 pick. In the Baltimore area, everyone talks about Loyola MBA's like they're gods gift to business. Plus, Ive been researching their program for a little over 3 months now, and it just seems like an all around great program.
Johns Hopkins - I had no idea their MBA program was not accredited. I guess I can toss them out.
University of Maryland (Smith) - This would be my stretch school. Realistically, I probably wont be accepted, but its in the area and worth a try. What do you think?

3) Well that makes me feel better. I always thought my SAT scores were just average. Im a very determined student, so I think if I put my mind to it, I should be able to pull of a decent GMAT score. A realistic score for me would probably be somewhere between 550-620.
4) I think Im going to begin preparing by myself, but as the test draws closer, I will look into some of the programs GMAT Club sponsors (ie GMAX).
