Hjort,
I am planning to apply for Fall 07 to PT MBA schools in the San Francisco bay area. I still haven't taken my GMAT but I am looking beyond that to the actual app strength.
My main areas of concern regarding my application are:
1. Background in engineering:
I have a degree in Electrical engineering w/ a Masters and 6 years experience. I will be completing a Certification in MBA Foundation late this year, through the UC Berkeley Extension. Given the pool of tech background applicants in my area, how can I differentiate my application?
One good thing is that my undergraduate performance was extremely good (4.0GPA), I topped the university (of approx 800 students) and was the University gold medallist for my graduating class. I have a 3.8GPA for my Masters.
2. Volunteering/ Extra-curricular:
I have no volunteering experience, but am keen on building a well rounded application. As I plan to apply in 07 R1, I don't want to volunteer for a few months just to put it onto my resume, and get into a dicey situation because of that. Would you recommend I spend a year to build on this and apply Fall 08 instead of Fall 07?
3. No Managerial Experience:
This is a widespread problem in my area; I have gotten promoted twice in my job and have good feedback from my managers, but I don't see myself as a manager before the application process starts off. How much is managerial experience critical to the app strength?
4. Differentiate :
Any other thoughts on setting one-self apart other than a stellar GMAT score and Ivy league background? (Don't have either one; hopefully will fix the former sometime in the next 4-5 months)
Thanks in advance.
