Hello Hjort,
I just got my official GMAT score report, and I'm not too happy with my performance on the AWA. I scored 760 on the quantitative/verbal section but only a 4.0 on the AWA. I've heard that many top business schools do not put a lot of weight behind the AWA, and I've also heard that admissions officers are sometimes wary of applicants who retake the GMAT when they already have a high score.
Is my AWA score important? Should I retake the test? What about coughing up $45 to have it rescored?

I think you are fine, a 760 is an amazing score and while your AWA isnt that great - I am sure it will be overlooked. I have heard that they only use it if your personal essays are truly outstanding in order to gauge whether you are capable of writing them or not. I have never heard of someone retaking the GMAT to increase just their AWA score.
