In general, it is better to discuss more recent experiences. However, I have seen effective essays discussing earlier experiences (e.g. high school) especially if it was a particularly meaningful event or it gives insight into unchanging character traits. If I remember correctly there was a particularly effective essay on teamwork that described how the applicant and his fellow students survived an ill-fated mountain climbing expedition in his late teens.
