Hi Hjort,

I am a prospective mba applicant of indian origin. While evaluating my application strategy and decision to apply this year or next year, I was posed by question: What is average GMAT cut-off for applicants of Indian origin ?

I agree this is a very specific question. But, I believe that can help me to evaluate my present situation and feasibility. I am also taking a big risk in my career at present by not working and focussing on mba prep.

I would be very grateful for any ideas, tips or advice.

It is difficult to say- I think that the idea of cut-offs is overemphasized by applicants. Do you have a specific cluster in mind?

No specific cluster. the general applicant pool whose nationality is Indian. Knowing the average cut-off can help me to decide application strategy and also to know whether I should consider applying this year or not. (I have scheduled gmat in end-September 2006 and expected score is around 650).

I do not think there is any official cutoff! They have a pool of applicants and they usually want to restrict the number of people with similar demographic background!

Just so happens that there are several people from India who apply with similar profile. So to distinguish the applicants, GMAT is used as an attribute. Thus, an Indian necessarily needs to have higher GMAT scores wrt other Indians to distinguish him/her!

I dont think schools have GMAT cut off per se! GMAT is just an indicator of your academic abilities and some analytical and verbal skills (besides ur undergrad scores). As long as u have a decent score to highlight that you can cope up with the studies you are fine!

Again, this is what I understand based on talking to current/past students and reading the various newsgroups! I might be wrong! Hjort can chip in for expert comments!

I agree, I would not worry about cut-off especially if you do not have any specific schools in mind. With strong essays and good credentials, a score in the mid-600s should suffice for admission to the vast majority of MBA programs.

Thank you for your responses. I am considering following schools to apply this year - Chicago GSB, Columbia, Wharton, MIT, NYU Stern, Babson College, Boston University. Sorry I should had mentioned in earlier post. For the colleges noted here, do you have think average cut-off for indians would matter?
