Hi Hjort,
I apologize for a long long post but I will really appreciate if you evaluate my profile.
I am actually a little embarassed to post my GMAT score because I have attempted this test 3 times and just managed to bring up my score from a 510( 40Q, 20V) to 610 (44Q, 30V). I am not a quitter but the truth is that I am not very good at standardized tests and I know this from my experience with SATs, because after taking it 3 times I only managed a 1200. But anyways I have studied a lot for this exam and I was wondering if could please evaluate my profile, and if you can tell me whether any school will even touch my application
I am an Indian girl, 24 years old and a US Citizen. I did 2 years of high school in US and 4 yrs Bachelors from a state university. I have a GPA of 3.57 in Computer Science from a SUNY school, and the CS program is quite decent.
A little about my work experience. I graduated in May 2004. But even before graduating, I had started working for a very well renowned bank on Wall Street. During my junior year in college I was accepted in an Analyst program targeted at college students, and I was required to put in 20-30 hours per work, go to college full time and work full-time during breaks. I was working for a datawarehousing team( its a little techie but not hardcore). I did this program for a year till I graduated , and I was offered a full time job, and was accepted into the IT Analyst program and worked full-time with the firm for 1 year. Many people have told me that the one year that I worked for the firm while I was in school might not count. I was really hoping that it is something I could use to my advantage

I really learned a lot from this program, because I was doing work that can be compared to what a full-time would do and also took 18-19 credits per semester. This program really stretched me and I had to learn how to balance my professional and personal life and at the same time be academically competetive.
2.Currently working for a well renowned Management consulting firm and I will complete 2 years with the firm next june. So far my last 2 projects were for the Department of Defense for US govt. Worked at the client site and helped the projects in transitioning from the old system to the new system and in streamlining their processes and doing process modelling.
3. I just recently got an opportunity to work on a project in Zurich, Switzerland for about 8 months, and I am hoping that maybe international work experience will help me to some extent
So from May 2004-June 2007- I will have 3 years of full-time experience.
About extracurricular/leadership/Miscellaneous:
1. Since I am only 24, ofcourse I am not a manager and don't have significant leadership experience. I cannot say much but I am a good worker and I have helped my clients and the businesses. And I think I can manage to get decent recommendation letters.
2. I did manage 2 class projects during college, one was for a software engineering course, and I managed a team of 6 people.
3. Was an active member of professional societies such as Society of Hispanic professional engineers( was a webmaster for that for about year), and Society of Women Engineers.
4. I also worked on a research project with a CS professor and few graduate students for the Anesthesiology department at the university hospital. I worked with the team on enhancing the application.
5. I am also participating in a mentor program in my firm: mentoring a new Analyst for a year to ensure smooth transition with the firm.
6. I have participated in recruiting events for the firm and partcipated at the women's networking forums of the firm: advising female college students/grads with employment opportunities.
Please let me know if I have a shot at any schools. I have read many posts about people's opinions about how Indians need a high score. I agree that a high score is important, but it just makes me feel that so much emphasis is placed on this exam that it seems like people who are not good at standardized tests don't have a shot at good schools. I am proud to be an Indian and I love my culture. But should I think that is it my badluck that I am of an Indian descent? Since Indians need "high GMAT scores" to be even considered a prospective candidate ? I am sorry if I offended anyone but I hope some people can understand where I am coming from.
I would love to go to Cornell or NYU( though it seems like a stretch considering my GMAT scores now).
Univ of Rochester ( I was hoping to use it as my backup earlier, but I guess now it will have to be one of my target schools.)
An ideal choice would be to go to one of the top 15-20 school, but again my GMAT is a little low. For now I want to sort out the list of schools and get started on the essays because I feel that the exam is just one part of the application and its time to work on other parts now.....
