There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
I applied to 3 "top-15 Schools" in R1.
I'm close to submitting to one "top-30" for R2.
I intend to submit one "safe bet" for R2 (around Mid-Jan).
Since the first round (EA/ED/R1, whatever) interviews are coming out and I haven't heard from all 3 as yet:
1. should I try to apply one more among top-30 by Mid-Dec (R2)?
2. Should I wait until Mid-Dec before preparing another "safety net" app (R2)?
I would consider adding in some schools from other clusters. Right now I see 1 ultra elite (Stanford), 2 elites (UCB/Haas and Dartmouth/Tuck), one near elite (Purdue) and one near elite frontier (Katz). I would conisider adding some trans elites and and perhaps some more near elite cluster schools. In general, consider jettisoning "safety schools" from your portfolio unless you have a bona fide interest in these schools.
