Working with Consultants on Your Essays
Since this topic comes up frequently this time of year, I figured it was time for a post.
1. NEVER let the consultant write your essay for you. If the consultant is sending you entire sentences that she has written for you and that you are incorporating into the essay, you are no longer the author of the essay. This is an unacceptable ethical violation and often produces very weak essays.
2. There is always a great risk that you will lose your "voice" in the editing process. Make sure that the consultant does not try to transform your essay into her own.
3. Grammar and structure should not be viewed as an afterthought. How you express your ideas can often be as important as the substantive content.
4) The best consultants will tell you what you do not want to hear.
5) Reasonable minds can (and often should) differ when it comes to admissions questions. Do not be surprised if consultants came to different opinions with regard to your essays.
