hi - just took gmat prep cat 2. I was excited to see my verbal score....
It came out to 42 which is good, but lower than I expected (I hit this verbal score on 2 of 3 Kaplan CATs with seemingy harder questions).
I then checked my answers....
34 Right / 7 Wrong
More importantly,
Questions Right: 1-7,9,11-14,16-19,21-32,34-35,37-40
Questions Wrong: 8, 10, 15, 20, 33, 36, 41
Yup, never 2 wrongs in a row with some long streaks of rights.
I know what's most important is to identify my mistakes and improve, but I am confused. I hit a V40 on GMAT Prep Cat1 with 11 wrong and 6 of the last 8 wrong.
What does it take to surpass V42?? Why is it so much harder to score at or near the max on verbal with a seemingly better performance?

The scoring algorithm is much more complicated than # right/wrong. Most importantly, it matters which questions you are getting right and wrong. Missing an easy question hurts your score much more than missing a hard one, while getting a harder question right helps you much more than getting an easier one.
I don't want to speculate too much on the reason for your 2 scores, but here's one possibility: On the first test, you were doing very well and then you dropped at the end, but since some of those last problems were quite high-level, you didn't drop too far. On the second test, some of the problems you missed were a little easier, so your overall level didn't have a chance to rise as high as it should have, but since you didn't drop at the end, you came out higher. Of course, this is pure speculation, but the main point is that the scoring algorithm isn't broken; it's just hard to interpret sometimes. It comes down to this--work to get your process strong and reliable, stay on top of timing, and do your best. Learn what makes a problem hard for you and keep fine-tuning your approach to make those problems easier. Good luck!

Appreciate the response. At this point I've given up trying rationalize GMAC's scoring. Just took GMAT Prep Exam 2 from the Exam Pack 1 and again answered 7 verbal q's incorrectly....this time I correctly answered the first 15 (then missed 16 & 17 back to back, only back to back misses, others misses were pretty dispersed), and ended with the last 6 right. Verbal Score: 40...wtf? Also, had my best GMAT Prep Quant Performance by a long shot....only missed question#'s 4, 18, 25. Quant Score: 50. I missed questions within the first 5,6,7 and probably 10+ overall on each of the two free GMAT Prep exams and scored Q49.
Seems like the curve is much higher on the Exam Pack I vs the 2 free exams, oh well. Really hope the actual exam is a bit more forgiving...
