What is the value of x ?

(1) x +1 = 2 - 3x
(2) 1/(2x) = 2

Target question: What is the value of x ?

Statement 1: x + 1 = 2 - 3x
At 3x to both sides of the equation to get: 4x + 1 = 2
Subtract 1 from both sides: 4x = 1
Solve: x = 0.25
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: 1/(2x) = 2
Multiply both sides of the equation by 2x to get: 1 = 4x
Solve: x = 0.25
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

Answer: D

From statement I alone, x + 1 = 2 – 3x.
This is a simple linear equation in x and hence can be solved for a unique value of x.

Statement I alone is sufficient. Answer options B, C and E can be eliminated.


From statement II alone, 1 / (2x) = 2.
Again, a simple equation in x and can be solved for a definite value of x.

Statement II alone is sufficient. Answer option A can be eliminated.

The correct answer option is D.
