When a certain tree was first planted it was 4 feet tall and the height increased by a constant amount each year over the next six year. At the end of the sixth year the tree was 1/5 taller than it was at the end of the fourth year. By how many feet did the height of the tree increase each year?

a) 3/10
b)2/5
c) 1/2
d) 2/3
e)6/5

can someone please give me a detailed explanation/solution for this problem . Many Thanks

Year 1 = 4 feet
Y1 end = 4 + k
Y2 end = 4 + 2k
Y3 end = 4 + 3k
Y4 end = 4 + 4k
.
.
Y6 end = 4 + 6k = (4 + 4k)*(6/5)
mutiply both sides by 5
20 + 30k = 24 + 24k
6k = 4
k = 2/3

Total increase in height = 6*2/3 = 4

Where did I do wrong?

Is it asking the total increase in height
- for 6 years?
- or for each year?

Height at end of 6 years = height at end of four years + height grown between 4th and 6 th years.
let x be growth per year

4+ 6(x) = 4+4(x) + 1/5(4+4(x))

=> 2x= 4/5 + 4/5 *x

=> x =2/3
