We're looking for the choice that would be most useful in evaluating the argument.
One can argue that D isn't perfect, but it's certainly the best out of the bunch.
If chances are low that planetary systems contain many large comets, then we have reason to doubt the conclusion that the chances that intelligent life will emerge on a planet are low.
If chances are low that planetary systems contain many large comets, then the conclusion is strengthened.
The word many in choice D might be off-putting, but the other choices have clear flaws.

I am not sure if it is correct to include Number agreement rule of SENTENCE correction in CR, but I used that tool to eliminate Option B and select Option E.
Note: carefully argument talks about being struck by large comets (plural comets), but option B says ''a comet'' (single comet). It doesn't matter the planet can survive a single comet or not. The point is perhaps it could survive a single comet, but another comet will very soon destroy all the lives. So just knowing whether planet would survive only one comet will not help evaluate the argument.
Can someone guide if using logic of SINGULAR -PLURAL and SV agreement work in CR analysis?

Premise: The chances that a large planet the size of Jupiter or Saturn will be formed, however, are low.
Premise: Without Jupiter and Saturn, whose gravitational forces have prevented Earth from being frequently struck by large comets, intelligent life would never have arisen on Earth.
Conclusion: Since planetary systems are unlikely to contain any large planets, the chances that intelligent life will emerge on a planet are, therefore, low.
The conclusion of the argument is based on the facts that large planets are needed to pull large comets away from the smaller planets that can support life. If there are no comets to pull away then the conclusion fails.
