Permise :
1. Boiled food loses much of its original nutritional value.
2. Human body needs nutrients in food.
3. Steamed food contains a high amount of its original nutritional value.

Ques : Which of the following conclusions can most properly be drawn from the information above?

Pre-thinking : As per the argument the logical conclusion that follows is that :
Steamed food contains higher amount of nutrients than boiled food. Steamed food is healthier for human compared to boiled food.

Lets analyse our options now :
(A) Nutrients help the body heal damaged cells. - Incorrect as this is completely new information and no mention of healing damaged cells in the argument.

(B) Steaming food is not a common cooking method. - Incorrect as this is also completely new information.

(C) Steamed food is the healthiest form of food. - Incorrect as the argument only mention about steamed and boiled food. We do not know about all the forms of food to say that steamed is the healthiest of all.

(D) Steamed food is healthier than boiled food. - Correct as this is similar to what we pre-thought and this is what we can logically conclude from the argument.

(E) Steamed food is not as tasty as boiled food. - Incorrect as the argument does not mention anything about the taste of the different forms of food.

Answer: Option D

Which of the following conclusions can most properly be drawn from the information above?

(A) Nutrients help the body heal damaged cells.

(B) Steaming food is not a common cooking method.
=> No information on how common a cooking method is. The passage just says Steamed food preserves more nutritional content

(C) Steamed food is the healthiest form of food.
=> The passage is only concerned about Steamed food and Boiled food, hence comparative form must be used. "Healthiest" is a superlative form and no information on any other form of food is provided.

(D) Steamed food is healthier than boiled food.
=> CORRECT. Nutrients are important for Human body and Steamed food contains more original nutritional content than boiled food does. Therefore, Steamed food is healthier than boiled food

(E) Steamed food is not as tasty as boiled food.
=> Steamed food contains more original nutritional value but if being more nutritional is tastier or not, no info.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

When food is boiled it loses much of its original nutritional value. The nutrients in food are what the human body needs to function correctly. Food that has been steamed contains a high amount of its original nutritional value.

Which of the following conclusions can most properly be drawn from the information above?

(A) Nutrients help the body heal damaged cells.

Incorrect.

This is an Inference question, so the argument is comprised of premises only, on which basis you are asked to draw a conclusion:

Premise A: When food is boiled it loses much of its original nutritional value.
    +
Premise B: Nutrients are important in keeping the human body healthy.
    +
Premise C: When food is steamed it only loses a little of its original nutritional value.
    =
    Conclusion: ?

The argument does not mention anything about the healing of cells. This answer choice presents new information that resembles an additional premise. Unfortunately, you should be looking for a conclusion based upon the current premises.

(B) Steaming food is not a common cooking method.

Incorrect.

The argument does not mention anything about the popularity of cooking methods. Therefore, based on the argument, we cannot conclude that to steam food is not a common practice.

(C) Steamed food is the healthiest form of food.

Incorrect.

According to the argument, steamed food is indeed quite a healthy form of food. However, the argument does not provide enough information to conclude that it is the healthiest form of food in existence. For example, what about about fresh food that has not been cooked at all?

(D) Steamed food is healthier than boiled food.

The argument tells us that nutrients are healthy. It also tells us that boiled food does not contain many of these nutrients while steamed food does. Therefore, the conclusion that steamed food is healthier than boiled food is a logical one.

(E) Steamed food is not as tasty as boiled food.

Incorrect.

The argument does not mention anything about taste. This answer choice cannot be concluded logically from the given premises.

Type: Conclusion/inference

When food is boiled it loses much of its original nutritional value. The nutrients in food are what the human body needs to function correctly. Food that has been steamed contains a high amount of its original nutritional value.

(A) Nutrients help the body heal damaged cells.
- the passage does not mention damaged cells

(B) Steaming food is not a common cooking method.
- we cannot say, based on the information from the passage.

(C) Steamed food is the healthiest form of food.
- all the passage mentions is that 'steamed' food retains a high amount of nutrients; we still don't know whether these type of food is the healthiest.

(D) Steamed food is healthier than boiled food. - Since steamed food retains more nutrients than boiled food does, we can reasonably infer (D). Therefore, (D) is the right answer choice.

(E) Steamed food is not as tasty as boiled food.
- 'taste' is not at all discussed in the passage.
