Which of the following best completes the passage below?
Monarch butterflies, whose average life span is nine months, migrate from the midwestern United States to selected forests outside Mexico City. It takes at least three generations of monarchs to make the journey, so the great-great-grandchildren who finally arrive in the Mexican forests have never been there before. Yet they return to the same trees their forebears left. Scientists theorize that monarchs, like homing pigeons, map their routes according to the earth’s electromagnetic fields. As a first step in testing this theory, lepidopterists plan to install a low-voltage transmitter inside one grove of “butterfly treesâ€

Looks like "D" to me.

I think it is 'D'.

The experiment that the lepidopterists are attempting is to test the theory that monrachs guide themselves thru earth's electromagnetic fields. So probably putting a low voltage transmittor will slightly disorient the earth's electromagnetic field, (trying to justfy my answer with an obscure physics funda ) and may mislead the monarchs, so they cud either by attracted or distracted towards the particular tree.

I will go with B too.

As a first step in testing this theory

I am guessing the first step is to prove that they are affected by electricity, subsequent steps will show if the earth's electromagnetic field is the cause.

I would go with ‘D’.
I assume that the low-voltage trasmitter trasmits electricity and since a magnetic field gets created when electricity flows, I presume it will be similar to the earth’s electromagnetic field.

B for me. This evidence is still not sufficient to prove D. All it does to prove that the butterfly shows certain reactions to electricity.

OA is B.
However I had chosen C. Can someone explain what is wrong with C?

I just came across this question myself and I too have the same question... why is C wrong? I understand why B is right, but to me it is saying the same as C.

B is right , because it says the first step...
D is a Trap

A just gave me the deepest belly laugh! D goes way too far.

Select (B) and click confirm.

How does testing whether "monarch butterflies are sensitive to electricity" relate to the scientists' hypothesis?
