Study tips for the GMAT

  • Set one small, achievable goal. For example, start by promising to study for 30 minutes on your first day. This study tip is geared toward making your goal seem manageable. It is something you are likely to achieve, and once you achieve it, you will feel a sense of accomplishment, which will make you want to do more.
  • Choose one area of focus. It can be discouraging to look at the GMAT and think, “I need to re-learn EVERYTHING.” Instead, pick one small topic at a time. For example, you could focus on learning geometry rules or 10 new idioms for sentence correction. You could also spend time reading articles in noteworthy publications to improve your reading comprehension skills. Not sure where you need to improve? Try one of our Free GMAT Practice Tests to get an idea. (Note that this study tip is perfect for #1 above, as well!)
  • Find allies. A support system is important. Find a person or group that will support you on your path to your MBA. This could be a friend, family member, or fellow student. Don’t forget to schedule check-ins and set aside time for post-study rewards—those are important too!
