Hi,
I am in the process of applying to schools this year. I have a slight idea of where I want my career to head post MBA, however I have some doubts and wanted to understand what makes sense.
I am an Economics graduate from India (3 year degree) with 3 years of experience in the Analytics at Mckinsey. By the time I go for MBA I would have 4 years of experience. I am in the Marketing & Sales Analytics team here as an analyst and my role involves working on Consumer Data Analytics using Statistics.
Goals:
Short-term goal is to work as a product manager at a tech-retail firm. The MBA will help me make this switch, add to the technical skill-set in terms of knowledge and also networking and help me get the management knowledge required for a product owner.
Long term goal is to help conceptualize and be a founding team member of a tech product that is in its infancy or maybe help the expand business operations of a product to India.
My concerns with the goals are such:
1. Is this too vague because I have read essays where people specify the exact technology they want to work for. However to be honest I do not have such a specific role in mind. For example I may say I would want to work with Amazon but in reality there is no limit to the kind of technology firm I would like to be a part of.
2. Again with the long term- is it too vague ?
3. Since this is my Post MBA goal, my target colleges are all where tech is a focus, is it possible that my application becomes too generic because my competition is likely to have similar goals.
I just wanted to run these goals of mine with the forum members and see if they will make sense to the Adcoms. Also, if I can hear back from someone who followed the same career path, that will be great.
