Hi,

I am in the process of applying to schools this year. I have a slight idea of where I want my career to head post MBA, however I have some doubts and wanted to understand what makes sense.

I am an Economics graduate from India (3 year degree) with 3 years of experience in the Analytics at Mckinsey. By the time I go for MBA I would have 4 years of experience. I am in the Marketing & Sales Analytics team here as an analyst and my role involves working on Consumer Data Analytics using Statistics.

Goals:

Short-term goal is to work as a product manager at a tech-retail firm. The MBA will help me make this switch, add to the technical skill-set in terms of knowledge and also networking and help me get the management knowledge required for a product owner.
Long term goal is to help conceptualize and be a founding team member of a tech product that is in its infancy or maybe help the expand business operations of a product to India.

My concerns with the goals are such:
1. Is this too vague because I have read essays where people specify the exact technology they want to work for. However to be honest I do not have such a specific role in mind. For example I may say I would want to work with Amazon but in reality there is no limit to the kind of technology firm I would like to be a part of.
2. Again with the long term- is it too vague ?
3. Since this is my Post MBA goal, my target colleges are all where tech is a focus, is it possible that my application becomes too generic because my competition is likely to have similar goals.

I just wanted to run these goals of mine with the forum members and see if they will make sense to the Adcoms. Also, if I can hear back from someone who followed the same career path, that will be great.

Yes, your instincts are right on here in that you do need to be more specific about your goals! If you say you want to go into tech you need to explain what area of tech & WHY this is your passion. It's not enough to just make the case for why there is demand/growth in that area, the adcom wants to know why you want to devote your life to it (since after all, there are plenty of growth opportunities out there - so why this one in particular?) Not 100% sure of the specifics of your demographics beyond just being from India, but among Indian males (which are the the toughest demographic when it comes to b-schools apps), product manger at a tech firm is the most common post-MBA goal that we see (followed closely by consulting).

So, if tech is your passion I think there are ways to speak about it that will help your unique story come through, but it is definitely worth considering other paths as well given how common these goals are. And either way you want to be as spec as possible - what are of tech in the ST & LT, what unmet need or unsolved problem will the start up you join tackle (and again here you need to be sure to make a case for how you'll be able to do this better than a large firm like Google, etc that has way more resources than a start up could).

Jon,

Thanks for answering my question. It was really helpful to get your thoughts.

A little more about my profile : Indian Female, B.Sc Economics working as a Statistical Analyst for McK.

Now the issue is how do I draft an essay which specifications - do you have any advice on how to move forward. I had looked through profiles of students at different schools and had come across a female who Interned at Google as a Product Strategist and then joined Airbnb as a Product Specialist. Now this is the kind of career path I have in mind. I also share her vision of "changing lives through technology". Do you think I can carry forward such examples to clarify what I am aiming at or you still think I should find some thing specific to talk about.

what are of tech in the ST & LT, - I did not understand this statement in your response. Could you clarify further?
Also what other paths do you think are there - and would it be wise to state them as my goal just to try and distinguish myself?

Looks like I left some words out there. :) What I meant to say is you need to show the specific area of tech you want to focus on in the ST & LT & why as well as the impact you plan to have. It's great to say you want to change lives through technology but HOW? Via wearable technology that helps people monitor health issues? something to do with AI (and if so, what?), ed tech? etc. There are tons of possibilities here & the adcom wants to know YOUR specific focus & why.

We can definitely help you craft your specific story & focus -- that is what we do! That said, we'd need a LOT more info about you than what you've provided here. When we start work with a client we send them a detailed questionnaire to help us gather all the info we need about them professionally & personally & then work with them to give them our advice on strategy - in other words, the unique value proposition we want to convey & how we want to convey it. Crafting strong, clear goals is definitely a part of that value proposition as well.

If you'd like some help there reach out to Claudia & she can tell you more about how we work together & also set you up with a free consultation. You can reach her at Claudia@admissionado.com. Look forward to hopefully hearing from you!
