Hello guys,
On scanning the forum and the schools I'd want to apply to in the US, I found that most of them have their Round 1 deadlines by October 1st ( approx. )
I have scheduled my GMAT exam for the last week of August as I need close to 3 months to prepare well for the exam.
( I have tried to prepare for the exam devoting an entire month ( May 2015 ) and I'm stuck at a 580 MGMAT CAT score. I need the next 2 months to prepare myself to get a 750ish )
Now my doubt is that is there a distinction between applying to schools in Round 1 or Round 2 ? Is Round 1 supposed to be more favourable to candidates as compared to Round 2? Say, I do not get my desired score in August and I plan to retake the gmat ( which would mean, missing Round 1 ), will I be at a loss ? Will I miss out on my dream schools ?

The Round 1 deadlines for most US Schools is in the first two weeks of October, so you have a little more time than you realize. The specifics for each School matter though, so you need to make sure that you're crafting each of your applications for the specific Program(s) that you're applying to (and that can sometimes take more time than you think).
Have you thought about which Schools you want to apply to?
If you already know which ones you're interested in, then you can build those specific dates into your Schedule. In that same way, you can research the Programs to better gauge whether you should apply for Round 1 or Round 2. You might also want to discuss all of this with an Admissions Expert.

Great question. I am not an admissions expert, but I have spoken with many of them as I went through the process myself. I encourage you to stick with your current test date if you really feel that you need that time to study. You do not want to get an unsatisfactory GMAT score because you rushed the process. The fact that you could take the test again and apply in Round 2 if necessary is gold. The applications themselves are extremely important, so you will want to devote significant time to crafting them as well. In terms of the difference between Round 1 and Round 2 (in schools that have 3 rounds, some schools have unique application structures), there is not a real distinction here. I have heard arguments that round 1 applicants are more likely to be accepted because they apply first, and I have heard arguments that they are more likely to be waitlisted or even rejected because the school is waiting to see what great applicants apply in later rounds. You can view Rounds 1 and 2 as exactly identical. That being said, Round 3 is objectively more difficult, as many of the spaces have been filled by that point, so I would encourage you to avoid applying then.
