B is correct: "few people are known to have recovered"

These people recovered from the desease some time in the past, you should use "have + recovered"

consider:
"few people are known to dwell in that area" (they are still living there)
"few players are known to have won Wimbledon at 17"

Regards

(B) few people are known to have recovered from the disease once the clinical symptoms have appeared

Shouldnt the sentence be "few people are known to have recovered from the disease once the clinical symptoms appeared"?!!

Why do we need "once the clinical symptoms have appeared". The symptoms appeared in the past and then the recovery happened.

This is why I chose A at first.

Anyone have any insights why you need two present perfect tenses in choice B?

(B) few people are known to have recovered from the disease once the clinical symptoms have appeared

I too have a similar query as in 'have appeared' in B is incorrect since the symptoms appeared in the past and are not carrying now.. Though I guess B is the best choice..

10. The fear of rabies is well founded; few people are known to recover from the disease after the appearance of the clinical symptoms.
(A) few people are known to recover from the disease after the appearance of the clinical symptoms
(B) few people are known to have recovered from the disease once the clinical symptoms have appeared
(C) there are few known people who have recovered from the disease once the clinical symptoms have appeared
(D) after the clinical symptoms appear, there are few known people who have recovered from the disease
(E) recovery from the disease is known for only a few people after the clinical symptoms appear

While A is grammatically right - it fails to convey the intended meaning.

Few people are known to recover (from the disease) after the appearance of the clinical symptoms; that means some people CAN recover even before the appearance of clinical symptoms?? Ridiculous.

Few people are known to have recovered (from the disease) ONCE the clinical symptoms have appeared. Once acts as conjunction implying "as soon as" the symptoms have appeared.

Again between "Few people are known to recover" and "Few people are known to have recovered" --- the "have recovered" (TO BE VERB) is required to convey that the people Have Recovered (the present perfect does not just imply that the action finished RECENTLY but also implies that it actually FINISHED (the recovered completely);

Known to recover on the other hand gives an impression that the recovery process may or may not have been completed after having started... which is not true.
