Hi,

Can you please evaluate my profile.

-Pakistani national
-B.E. Electrical Engineering CGPA 2.58 (graduated May 2004)
-11+ years of international Oil & Gas upstream and midstream experience. Currently working in Angola on 28/28 rotations with a gas pipeline operator since 3.5 years
-Previously worked in Nigeria with Total E&P, Pakistan with a US based industrial automation system integrator, and Kazakhstan with Chevron.
-best GMAT: 620 in November 2013.
-Future goal: Strategy/General management within the Oil & Gas industry
-Interest in startups, 3 seed investments in startups related to Education, Fintech and futuristic Automotive.

I would like to improve my GMAT, but my current schedule just does not allow me to stay in one place for more than a month to concentrate and improve upon it. A lot of traveling and a 12-hour work day is keeping me from improving it. I want to apply for Round2. Which schools will be best suited?

Will be very grateful for an evaluation/analysis of my profile and any suggestions for me.

Thanks

Hey dude,
Good to hear from you. so the first thing is that if you really want an evaluation you are gonna have to elaborate upon those 11 years - like what do you DO? How much leadership do you have? what were your best achievements? how many promotions did you get? etc. etc. etc.

The second thing is that your low GPA + low GMAT + being Pakistani is not gonna make things easier for you. Meaning, you are gonna have to apply to relatively low-ranked schools with those scores. If you can't retake the GMAT again, then sure... no big deal. You apply to the best schools you can apply to.

But give me a biiit more detail about work, community service, and extra currics and then I'll get back to you.

Best,
Jon

Jon,

My current & previous positions involved mentoring national employees and helping them get on their feet. My current position is a consultant engineer/advisory role type work with a relatively new company (albeit hefty budget). It was only 2 years old when I joined and have virtually worked from scratch to build a centralized control room for the pipeline operations. This involved mentoring national employees, supervising vendors & leading a team of nationals to test several projects in US and South Africa. Also, act as focal point or Subject Matter Expert for key stakeholders like oil majors Chevron, Total & BP. Worked as subject matter design lead for a multi-million dollar new facilities project and consultant to special projects group.

Previous work involved work on a offshore oil platform. Again, a subject matter expert position, where the emphasis was to execute small projects and recommend actions after failures in operations. 10-12 new 'live' modifications performed, something considered critical for the O&G industry, having to do undertake major work without affecting production.

The job previous to that was primarily an office based job in which I got 2 promotions in 4 years. Joined in on 2nd tier and went up to 4th tier before resigning to accept more project specific, site based jobs. During this job I was assigned on a project in Kazakhstan with Chevron. This job included managing projects, resources and overall project budgets. Could give more details later on.

The job before that was a Trainee position with a local chemical company.

Personally, i have worked with friends to setup a fund to help deserving people. It has been ongoing for the past 8-9 years. Just recently we sent a deserving patient to India for a liver transplant through that fund. I have had varied experiences, like abseiling and sky diving.

As mentioned earlier, I have 3 seed investments in startups related to Education, Fintech and futuristic Automotive.

I just jotted down things here. I know many might or might not be relevant. Anyways, please comment on what you think is best.

Thanks again

Well you definitely do have some great stuff there, although the GMAT is a bit killing you. But if it's time to apply now and there's no time for a retake, I'd aim for schools in the 25-50 ranking (US news and world report). I might suggest starting with Rice and Aberdeen, as both have excellent Oil and Gas programs and connections. And then what you want to do is add another 3-4 schools that are say 40 points +/- your GMAT (but not all on the same side :) ). As a stretch school, I'd suggest McCombs (again because of energy).

And I think that your startup + helping people + professional career can help you build a very nice and strong profile.

Best,
Jon
