The arguement assumes that the 400 alumni who sign up during the phone a thon would not simply sign up through other methods if the phone a thon were canceled. If many of them would still become mentors through email or other outreach, the discontinuing the phone a thon would not reduce the total no. by 400. So the conclusion depends on this situation.

A. Cost effectiveness is irrelevant
B. ABility to contact alumni by email does not address how many would sign up
D. This compares likelihood across alumni but does not affect the conclusion about loss
E. other channels becoming better would weaken the conclusion, but the argument does not need to assume they would not improve

Hence, C

C.
A. incorrect. there is no mention of the cost of the tele-thon anywhere in the text.
B. incorrect. The argument made does not depend on this information since this wouldn't explain why the number of tutors would fall by almost 400. Also, if students that would've been contacted by telephone, would still sign up if contacted by email, then we wouldn't see that decrease in tutors.
C. Correct. To make sense the argument must assume that almost none of the students that would've signed up if contacted during the tele-thon would sign up in other ways.
D. incorrect. the likelihood of the students to sign up is irrelevant to the argument made.
E. incorrect. This statement suggests a similar idea to all document needs to function but not fully. The argument depends on whether or not 400 students will be replaced, not whether or not the other channels might improve.

Conclusion mentions a drop by about 400 and not atleast 400. So the author assumes the other channels will either stay as is or will get better, i.e. phone-a-thon will alone decrease. this suggests the alumni who sign up using phone-a-thon won't sign up or cannot be reached via other channels

A - Cost is not a concern
B - if this can be done, then there is no reason for author to worry about a 400 drop (kind of weakens the conclusion)
C - Ok, if hardly any alumni signs up through other channel, then 400 drop will occur
D - this comparison is irrelevant
E - this argument is not based on other programs getting better or staying the same

Each spring, Northbridge University runs a weeklong alumni phone-a-thon. In a typical year, the phone-a-thon results in about 400 alumni signing up to mentor current students. Therefore, if the university were to discontinue the phone-a-thon, the number of alumni who sign up to mentor students each year would decline by about 400.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. The phone-a-thon costs the university less than the value of 400 alumni mentors’ time.
B. The university would still be able to contact alumni through email if the phone-a-thon were discontinued.
C. Few alumni who currently sign up to mentor through the phone-a-thon would sign up through other university outreach efforts if the phone-a-thon were discontinued.
D. The alumni who sign up to mentor through the phone-a-thon are not substantially more likely than other alumni to sign up to mentor in any given year, regardless of how they are contacted.
E. The university’s other mentoring sign-up channels would not become significantly more effective at attracting mentors if the phone-a-thon were discontinued.

Claim: Phone-a-thon produces ~400 mentors, so cancelling it will reduce the number of mentors by ~400.
Assumption: Those 400 mentors would not show up anyway through any other channel.

Option A: Cost/value is irrelevant to the conclusion.
Option B: Whether email exists doesn't matter.
Option C: PERFECT. Says those mentors would not sign up otherwise.
Option D: Talks about likelihood in general. not substitution if a phone-a-thon ends.
Option E: Too speculative or indirect.

Hence, OPTION C.

P->Phone-a-thon --results in about 400 alumni signing up to mentor current students
C-> If discontinued-- will loose these no. of mentors
we need to find the assumption?
1. talks about cost--nowhere mentioned --out of scope
2.talks about an alternate method of contact e mail ,however its relation to the conclusion not clear---NO
3.also discusses other methods of contact if adopted may result in getting some mentoring. but no relation to conclusion----NO
At first seems a tug of war between D & E, however in my opinion E supersedes over D in that it displays a direct comparison of effectiveness of Phone-a-thon over other methods of contact, to result in requisite mentorship or conclusion.
so E

Here's the breakdown on answer choices:

A: Talks about cost vs value, which is irrelevant to whether mentor count falls by 400. Incorrect

B: Just says the email contact is possible, the argument doesnt rely on that. Incorrect

C: It says that a few of the alumni who sign up via the phone a thon would sign up through other outreach if the phone a thon ended. If this were false (most of them would still sign up via email/web/etc), then cancelling the phone-a-thon would not reduce mentors by 400, breaking the conclusion. Correct

D: Compares the "phone a thon mentors" vs "others alumni" in general. The conclusion only needs to know what these 400 would do if the phone-a-thon disappeared, not how similar they are to others. Incorrect

E: Says the other channels wont become more effective, the conclusion only needs that the same 400 dont mostly agree to other channels, not that other channels never improve overall. Incorrect

Option C

A)cost is not a concern in the arguement
b)this does not provide any support t arguement, infact it's negation will strengethen the arguement.
C)same as above
d)the sepcific kind of alumni is not in question, hence does not need to be vital assumption
e)negation of this statement, will give extra ways to get alumni, hence weaken the arguement. so this is a vital assumtpion

answer is E

A. The phone-a-thon costs the university less than the value of 400 alumni mentors’ time. The cost of the event/cost related affect of discontinuing the event is not the concern of argument.
B. The university would still be able to contact alumni through email if the phone-a-thon were discontinued. This actually somewhat weakens the conclusion. If the alumini can still be contacted, then the signup numbers should not decrease.
C. Few alumni who currently sign up to mentor through the phone-a-thon would sign up through other university outreach efforts if the phone-a-thon were discontinued. Again, this somewhat weakens the conclusion. If the alumini can sign up through other means, then the number will not decrease.
D. The alumni who sign up to mentor through the phone-a-thon are not substantially more likely than other alumni to sign up to mentor in any given year, regardless of how they are contacted. This actually compares two alumini. This is true whether phone-a-thon is continued or cancelled.
E. The university’s other mentoring sign-up channels would not become significantly more effective at attracting mentors if the phone-a-thon were discontinued. Correct. If other channels become more active & get to signup those alumini, then the number may not decrease drastically by 400.

Argument is a uni running a phoning program where 400 alumni sign up to mentor. Therefore, if the phoning program gets discontinue then about 400 alumni sign up will reduce.

Assumption. Those 400 who signup will NOT use other programs should be phoning program discontinue.

A. Incorrect. Cost is irrelevant.
B. Incorrect. It's not whether the uni are able to contact the alumni. It's about a program.
C. Correct. Few is the key word here. Only few would use other programs. Should we negate this assumption, then many will use other programs to sign up and decline will be much less than 400.
D. Incorrect. It's about signing up through a particular program in question. Misleading.
E. Incorrect. Close but C is a better answer as it directly talks about the phoning program.

A. The arguement is only about the number of mentors and not whether teh program is worth the money......Irrelevant
B. If they can still reach alumni via mail, the number of mentors might not decline by 400. This weakens the argue equipments........No
C. Few alumni who currently sign up through the phone a thon would sign up through other efforts if the phone a thon were discontinued.... If these 400 people would sign up by any way, then the total wouldn’t drop, the arguement depends on idea that they wont switch to another rmethod........Answer.
D. This only compares one group of alumni to another.....No
E. Even if other channels stay the same in effectiveness, the other people also might migrate to them.....No

Main Point: The number of alumni would decline by about 400 if phone-a-thon discontinued.
Basis: In a typical year, about 400 alumni sign up via phone-a-thon.
Logic: Since the source is discontinued, the signs expected from it would go down.
Gaps: Are there no other way to get those sign ups if the source discontinued?

(A) - Irrelevant
(B, (C) - Weakens the argument as if there are other ways to contact alumni, the 400 decline might not occur.
(D) - Weakens again. If alumni via phone-a-thon are not more likely than alumni signs via other source, then 400 decline would not occur.
(E) - Correct. If other sources would not become more effective then only 400 decline can be expected. This is the assumption without which the argument would fall apart.

A. The issue of the cost does not address the issue at hand which is the decline in the number of mentors after phone withdrawal
B. If that is true then the numbers may actually not drop that much so this is not an assumption but additional information
C Correct: Good assumption because if many actually sign up via other channels then the argument makes no sense at all
D. This is not necessary for the argument to hold because they need not be substantially different
E. This choice is out of scope because we do not care nor know if other channels will be more effective or equally effective

Solution:

1. Incorrect- Irrelevant choice.

2. Incorrect- This choice goes against the conclusion.

3. Incorrect- This choice just repeats what is being mentioned in the conclusion.

4. Incorrect- This choice is irrelevant.

5. Correct- This choice bridges the gap between a premise and a conclusion. And if we negate it, the conclusion will fall apart. That other mentoring channels would be less attractive to mentors even if the phone-a-thon were discontinued.

Hence. Option E

Conclusion- Therefore, if the university...... by about 400
A- cost of the phone-a - thon is irrelevant
B-even if we contact through e-mail, we don't know whether the alumni will sign-u or not- irrelevant
C- Negation- Almost all alumni who sign-up though the phone-a -thon would sign up through other university outreach efforts if phone-a -thon is discontinued- it breaks our conclusion- Correct
D-Trap- alumni are not substantially more likely but they are at least more likely to sign- up even if the phone-a-thon is discontinued. It Weakens the conclusion but doesn't damage the conclusion as much as option-C, had Option- C not been there ,this would have been the correct choice. OUT
E-Other Channels becoming more attractive doesn't tell us whether Discontinued phone-a-thon alumni member will join these channels or not- OUT

If I am allowed to rephrase the passage.

400 alumnis are signed up for mentoring through coldcalling. This is the usual number of signup university gets. If the coldcalling is stopped, there will be a drop of 400 signup every year.

Option A - Wrong - There are no costing issues or money issues We are just worried about number of signups
Option B - Wrong - This statement weakens the conclusion but not a necessary assumption
Option C - Correct - Few alumnis will sign up through other efforts than coldcalling if the calling is discontinued. IF we try the negation test, the conclusion will fall apart
Option D - Wrong - It compares these alumnis with other alumnis...irrelevant.
Option E - Wrong - We are worried about the 400 through cold call not the others

During each spring, North bridge university runs a weeklong alumni phone a thon (PAT). In a typical year, PAT results in 400 alumni signing up for this weeklong marathon. This event is to mentor current students.

If the North bridge university discontinues this PAT event, then the number of alumni signing to mentor students will decline by 400. This is the conclusion and we need to find a suitable assumption.

If , 400 alumni sign up via PAT , then the mentoring current students occurs. If not, the mentoring program fails.

The figure 400 is just a number, actually the key player is what happens after the PAT is discontinued , they have two choices in front of them. Either choose to remain silent or look for alternative options to make it work.

A) This option compares the time of mentors with cost incurred. Alumni mentorship is a great asset for any university. This comparison makes the option irrelevant. Hence, wrong.

B) The university can choose any mode of communication as it desires - email, postal mail or any other innovative approaches. This mentions if phone communication is removed, there are multiple ways to get the task done. Hence, the drop of 400 won’t happen. Speaking of alternative forms of communication is not relevant. Hence, Wrong.

C) If option C is true, that PAT is discontinued, and all the 400 alumini don’t choose any other alternative options to communicate, then the conclusion of decline in 400 holds good.

If we NEGATE THE OPTION: What if the PAT is discontinued, but the determined 400 alumni find an alternate route - outreach channels to get connected with the current students. So, the decline of 400 doesn’t happen. The conclusion falls apart.

This is the correct answer.

D) The option pegs the number 400, only those fixed alumni will use PAT to get connected. Other alumni won’t. If that’s the case, even if they fail to turn up, the other alumni will use the alternative channels to get connected. The question is not whether the group on failure to turn up is replaced. Hence, wrong.

E) This option mentions PAT as a catalyst for other alternative outreach Channels to work effectively. Hence, Wrong.
